There’s a renewed call for internet safety in the Bay Area after deputies said a man lured a child to his car for sex.

It happened while the 13-year-old boy was on vacation in Treasure Island.

People living closest to the suspect said they never expected this from the young man.

Neighbor Midge Paxton said she isn’t taking any chances with her 11-year-old daughter.

“Her computer is checked once a week,” she said. “She’s always with us, and like I said we keep her busy,” she added as the family packed up their van for a day at Busch Gardens.

She said she’s keeping an especially close eye after she learned 22-year-old Kyle Ostromecky was arrested after sheriff’s officers said he lured a 13-year-old boy to have sex with him just a few miles away in Treasure Island.

The boy was on vacation with his parents from Manatee County. Manatee County Sheriff’s officers said they caught Ostromecky after he drove from St. Petersburg to Manatee County to have sex with the boy again, according to the report.

Deputies say he got his victim to come out to the car the first time using an internet enabled cell phone where they say he talked to the boy on a dating site and texted him to come out.

It’s exactly why Paxton, who lives just a few houses down from Ostromecky, hasn’t let her daughter have a cell phone yet.

“It’s so quiet, then to hear something like that, I mean it could be your next door neighbor,” she said.

“The problem is,” Paxton’s husband Ed added, “You figure out one way to supervise your kid, and then there’s three other dangers you haven’t figured out yet.”

It’s a common feeling among some parents who say watching their kids with new technology can be tough.

“It’s hard because you can check it at the end of the day but you don’t know what’s been deleted,” Ed said.

But a parent’s check is how Manatee Sheriff’s officers say they found out about Ostomecky. It’s also something Midge promises she’ll do.

“Check her phone once in a while, keep a sharp eye, when she walks out the door ‘where you goin?’ I’ll follow her if I have to,” she said.

The search is on for a missing man in Boyd County, described as having mental disabilities.

Police say 24-year-old John Moore was last seen at Artrips Care Facility in Ashland on Friday. He was wearing a gray shirt with red writing and jean shorts.

Police say Moore has mental disabilities, with the mental capacity of a 12 to 14 year old.

A woman was arrested overnight after pulling a gun on a stranger in Lexington.

Police say a man was driving on Alexandria Drive shortly after 11:30 when he stopped at a stop sign.

Officials tell LEX 18 that the man was flagged down by the driver in front of him. As he approached the other car, police say the driver pulled a gun on him.

Police were able to track the woman down by her license plate number.

35-year-old Natasha Horton was arrested and charged with wanton endangerment.

A Frankfort man has died and a 17-year-old has been charged with murder following a shooting on Routt Road Saturday.

Officers responded to the call around 2:00 a.m. When they arrived, police found a young man in his teens shot in the road. The coroner later identified the victim as 18-year-old Dillon Walker of Frankfort, Ky.

Walker was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

According to LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, police have arrested a 17-year-old juvenile and charged that person with murder.

A man is headed to prison for eight years in connection with a murder.

Sammy Bertram was sentenced Friday in Lewis County.

In July, he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery in connection with the murders of Jeff Long and Pamela Willis.

Long and Willis were found dead in Long’s burned out trailer along Leatherwood Road in February 2008. Five people were arrested in connection with that crime.

In 2010, Mitchell Royster, 27, was charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of first-degree arson.

In February 2013, Bertram, and Willie Burns, 25, and Chrissie Royster, 25, each were charged with two counts of murder, robbery, arson and tampering with physical evidence. Ashley Craft, 24, was charged with complicity to commit robbery.

Bertram was sentenced to eight years in Greenup County in connection with the murder. He was sentenced Friday to five years in Lewis County for an unrelated case. Those sentences will be served concurrently.

A Colorado Springs man has been arrested for allegedly arranging a meeting, via the Internet, to have a sex with a girl under 15, who was actually a law officer.

Joseph Albert Ellsworth, 58, is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on suspicion of Internet luring of a child and attempted sexual assault of a child, both felonies.

Ellsworth was arrested August 8 by investigators with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Ellisworth is described as a former Denver police officer.

A technician was online August 7 in a social networking site portraying herself as a child under the age of 15, the DA’s office said in a media release, when she received a text message from the suspect.

During numerous text messages and a telephone call between Ellsworth and the investigator he allegedly “asked to meet the purported teen to engage in sexual activity.”

Ellsworth is a registered sex offender living in Colorado Springs, the DA’s office said.

Investigators arrested Ellsworth when he arrived for a meeting at a Littleton restaurant, prosecutors said.

Ellsworth, who is being held on a $100,000 bond, is scheduled to be in court today to be advised of charges against him.

Buffalo Police are looking for your help in finding a missing person. Jeannie Mintalvo, 42, of Buffalo, has been missing since August 14 at 9 a.m. She was last seen on Gold Street in the Lovejoy area.

She was wearing jeans, a navy blue shirt with purple stripes, and a black heart purse. Police say she is 5′ 3″ tall and weighs 195 lbs. She is considered to have medical issues.

Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to call Buffalo police.

A highly unusual — and threatening — text message scared a Bowling Green woman enough that she contacted the police.

Officer Ronnie Ward said the woman, whose name has not been released, received a message earlier this week detailing a contract taken out on her life and asking for money to prevent the killing from being carried out.

Ward told the Daily News (http://bit.ly/XnDowD ) the texter asked for $1,500 to be sent through Western Union and then another $1,500 after the first payment was received. Ward says the woman was promised protection from harm if she paid.

Ward took the complaint from the woman and answered the text using his police department issued cellphone. The texter told Ward to send the money to a Susan Jackson in Dayton, Ohio. The phone number that sent the text messages was not registered to a Susan Jackson.

The phone number didn’t come back to anyone,” Ward said. “They asked me to send $1,500. No original texting had been done with me.”

As soon as the texter received the first $1,500, the texter said he would meet personally to accept the second payment. As soon as the texter confirmed the first money transfer, he texted, “you are safe as long as you are with me,” Ward said.

“I can deduce from his conversation with me … he’s having multiple conversations and can’t keep up with who he has sent this to. I would find it unusual that two people in Bowling Green would have contracts on their lives at the same time from the same telephone number,” Ward said.

Police do not know who made the original text or if it actually came from the number displayed on the victim’s cellphone.

Ward said a device attached to the Internet allows people to make calls at a low cost and scammers use devices that allow incoming phone calls to appear from any number they choose.

Ward said anyone receiving such a message should tell the sender to stop contacting them and file a report with the police.
