Another worry for parents in Lexington as a young boy said three strangers in a truck tried to pick him up Thursday.

It happened on Dallas Avenue, which isn’t far from Winchester Road.

The 10 year old said he was standing outside when the truck pulled up around 3 p.m.

The men started telling him to get in and opened the door. That’s when the boy ran inside his grandparents’ house to get help.

He said he doesn’t want this to happen to anyone else.

“Scream, say ‘help’ and run as fast as you can,” he said.

The truck is described as a white pickup that is missing a front bumper.

Two of the three men in the vehicle are described as having fairly long beards.

Fraud Investigation Georgetown Police Warn of Possible Scam

Police in Scott County have put out an alert about a possible police charity scam.

Georgetown Police said people in the area have received calls from someone asking for donations to benefit members of the police community.

The caller is reportedly from the National Police and Trooper Association.

“They went through a pretty significant spiel that the donations go to law enforcement training, families of law enforcement officers or troopers that are killed in the line of duty,” Georgetown Police Department Captain Robert Swanigan said.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Typos on the organization’s website sent out a red flag and police learned people who’ve claimed to raise money for the charity, the non-profit it’s registered to, have gotten in trouble in the past.

The non-profit is the International Union of Police Associations based in Florida.

According to most recent IRS documents, the non-profit received revenue of more than $12 million but only about $47,000 went to charities.

“One of the big problems with fundraising that people do not understand is it does require a fair amount of overhead,” Rich Roberts of the International Union of Police Associations said.

According to those same documents, more than $12 million in overhead.

“People are free to donate their money wherever they want to spend it obviously, but when we see like this happening we want to get the word out,” Capt. Swanigan said.

Donate if you wish, but police warn less than 1 percent of a group’s revenue isn’t a lot of charity.

Insurance Fraud Unemployment Insurance Scam Targets Wisconsin

A new scam is targeting consumers, employers and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and it could be part of a scam happening nationwide.

The Wisconsin DWD says it’s found more than 440 fraudulent claims for unemployment benefits that could be connected to a larger fraud case.

“You just feel like you have been victimized,” Victoria Seltun said.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

The last two days for local attorney Victoria Seltun have been spent on countless phone calls with police, the state unemployment office and even the FBI.

She’s just one of the latest victims of identity theft in an ongoing federal investigation. Someone used her personal information to file for unemployment benefits.

“The person had opened up a checking account using my information and the DWD had actually deposited one weeks’ worth of wages into that bank account,” Seltun explained.

Seltun says she first found out her identity had been compromised when her employer got a letter saying she had filed for unemployment insurance benefits.

“Many employers don’t pay attention to this they get multiple notices from DWD all the time on unemployment claims and employers don’t take the time to open them and respond,” she said. “This is exactly what the thieves are hoping for.”

Seltun says information from the DWD shows one payment of $370 was deposited into a bogus bank account before her employer received a letter from the state verifying that she should be receiving unemployment benefits. She says had her employer not notified the DWD of the fraudulent behavior, the scammer could have received up to $9620.

In a statement, the Department of Workforce Development says its systems haven’t been compromised and they remain secure. The DWD says its, “fully cooperating with an ongoing federal investigation.”

For Vicki Seltun, the questions surrounding how her information was stolen still remain. But the local attorney has some advice for others out there that could be the next victim of this latest scam.

“If you get mail at home from the DWD don’t just ignore it,” she said.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development says it is still looking into how much may have been paid out to scammers.

They say if you think you’ve been the target of this scam, report it to the Unemployment Fraud Hotline at 1-800-909-9472. They also have a website to report suspected fraud. You can find a link to that on the right-hand side of this screen under related items.

Missing Person Rosalyn Barns of Rusk County, TX

The Rusk County Sheriff’s Office investigation of a 54-year-old missing woman brings to four the number of missing persons cases the department is investigating.

The oldest stretches back to 2007.

Sgt. David Roberts of the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that Rosalyn Barns was last seen about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday getting into a silver car on Texas 43.

When the car turned onto FM 1716, Roberts said, was the last time Barns was seen. The department is seeking help locating her.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Here’s a look at the other missing persons cases still open in Rusk County:

James Lamar Tidwell, 58, was last seen by his wife Feb. 24, according to the Henderson Police Department.

Police conducted a welfare check at Tidwell’s home Feb. 28 at the request of his employer, Flanders Electric. His wife then reported last seeing him four days earlier.

Tidwell’s truck was found about eight miles from his home on Texas 315 and FM 95 in Rusk County.

No physical evidence has been found to indicate foul play, but investigators said at the time circumstantial evidence pointed in that direction.

Cornelius Blalock was last seen April 2, 2008, after he fled deputies during a traffic stop on U.S. 59 in southeastern Rusk County.

Shirley Hunt, 70, disappeared from the Good Springs area in east Rusk County on June 19, 2007.

The Rusk County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Department of Public Safety searched Rusk CR 454 for several days after her disappearance but found no sign of Hunt.

Anyone with information regarding any of the missing person cases is asked to call Rusk County Crime Stoppers at (903) 655-8477 or the Rusk County Sheriff’s Office at (903) 657-3851.

All calls to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous.

A man has been arrested after a brief standoff with Lexington Police Wednesday afternoon.

Police say it all started as a drug bust at a home on Winter Garden, from where Daniel Buckley escaped in a car. Buckley then crashed at Alumni Dr. and Yellowstone, jumped out of the vehicle and tried to steal a moped and a car to escape, but wasn’t successful.

Police say he then ran on foot and broke into a duplex on High Ridge. The people who live there were home and told officers they didn’t know the man.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Police called ERU and command center for a standoff and Buckley quickly surrendered.

He is charged with trafficking in marijuana. Police say more charges are expected.

Missing Person Report Faked to Avoid Court

The case of a missing Gaston County woman feared drowned off North Myrtle Beach took an abrupt turn Wednesday when police said Amy Lynette Arrington and her husband staged the disappearance to avoid the wife’s court date in Charlotte.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, authorities in Charlotte and in North Myrtle Beach said they did not know the whereabouts of Amy and Paul David Arrington.

Patrick Dowling, a spokesman for the North Myrtle Beach police, said Paul Arrington will be charged with filing a false police report. And the Mecklenburg County district attorney’s office said a warrant has been issued for Amy Arrington’s arrest.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Paul Arrington filed a missing person report Saturday evening with North Myrtle Beach, saying his 42-year-old wife told him she was going into the water. That touched off a land and sea search along the Horry County coast that lasted from Saturday evening until late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Amy Arrington missed a scheduled appearance Monday in Mecklenburg County court on charges including identity theft, forgery and obtaining property by false pretense.

“The court issued an order for her arrest when she failed to appear Monday,” a spokeswoman for the Mecklenburg district attorney’s office said Wednesday afternoon.

While searching the water, North Myrtle Beach police on Tuesday also began looking into the possibility that Arrington had disappeared on land. And by Wednesday morning, Dowling said, “police determined that Amy Lynette Arrington did not drown in the ocean off North Myrtle Beach on July 5.”

Rather, he said, North Myrtle Beach police and other law enforcement agencies determined Amy and Paul Arrington “conspired for her to disappear to avoid having to show up in court in North Carolina to answer to charges filed against her in that state.”

Amy Arrington’s criminal record dates to 1992 with charges mostly in Union, Gaston and Mecklenburg counties. Among the charges: credit card theft, larceny and financial card fraud.

According to a search of court records by the Observer, Amy Arrington served more than two years in prison for identity theft and fraud. She was released in 2008.

Her mother-in-law, Shirley Arrington, told the Observer on Tuesday that she was “floored” by the news reports of Amy Arrington’s legal problems. Shirley Arrington could not be reached Wednesday, after news broke that the disappearance allegedly had been staged.

Paul Arrington told police he watched his wife walk waist-deep into the water about 4:40 p.m. Saturday before he lay down on the beach and turned over.

About 20 minutes later, Paul Arrington said, he looked toward the water for his wife. He told police he saw a woman who he thought was his wife, but after he approached her, he realized it wasn’t. He then reported his wife missing to a lifeguard.

Speaking to the Observer on Tuesday, Paul Arrington’s brother, Todd, said he hasn’t talked to his brother much in the past year. Todd Arrington said his brother and Amy Arrington met through an online dating service.

“She came to my wedding, and I’ve met her a few times, hung out a little bit, but I really didn’t know anything about her,” Todd Arrington said.

Regarding Amy Arrington’s criminal past and pending charges, Todd Arrington said, “I don’t think Paul really had a clue.”

Court records show Amy Arrington was previously married. The couple divorced last year.
