Cold Case Detective Will Not Close Case Until Flint, MI Girl’s Body Found

A Flint police detective says he believes more than one person knows where the body of Coral Hall is hidden, and says he won’t stop looking — even if the girl’s grandmother is convicted of having killed her.

“I will not close this investigation until Coral is found,” said Detective Sgt. Greg Hosmer. “I will continue to follow up … to find her remains (regardless of) the outcome of this case.”

Police and prosecutors believe Lois Janish, the grandmother of Hall, killed her when Coral was just 14 years old and have charged her with open murder in a case that’s scheduled to go to trial in December.

http://liarcatchers.com/cold_cases.html

Hall disappeared from her grandmother’s home in Flint in September 1998 and has never been found or heard from since.

Hosmer, a cold case specialist, has led five searches since that time for Hall’s body, twice in locations he said Janish, 73, told him he should search.

Police have made use of canine cadaver dogs, received help from the city’s building inspectors, the Genesee County Land Bank and forensic anthropology students from Michigan State University, but Hall’s remains missing and her body unrecovered.

Earlier this month, Hosmer traveled out of state to follow up on a tip and said Monday, Oct. 28, that he believes “there’s others out there who do know something but will not cooperate.”

“I think at least two individuals out there haven’t been forthright” about Hall’s disappearance, he said.

Hosmer said Crimestoppers has become involved in the case, offering a $1,000 reward information that will lead to to the recovery of Hall’s body.

Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers at 800-422-5245 or Hosmer at (810) 237-6945.

Police and prosecutors arraigned Janish earlier this year in Flint District Court on a single charge of open murder after authorities say she killed Hall in 1998. Janish allegedly told investigators she killed the girl with a hammer then dismembered her body before scattering her remains, but she later recanted that story.

In August at a preliminary exam, a 42-year-old man testified he smoked crack with Hall and said Janish had offered him “time alone” with Hall in exchange for drugs.

Although Hall’s body has never been found, Hosmer said investigators believe she was killed and her body hidden, in part, because she never again contacted friends or family, never used her Social Security number and never surfaced despite her case having been featured in missing children campaigns.

Missing Person Body Found in DeSoto Feared to be Olathe, KS Man

A body discovered Tuesday afternoon in De Soto had clothing that matched the description of a man who has been missing since Oct. 20, according to a friend of the man’s family.

Henry Cox, a lawyer who is speaking for the family of 22-year-old Brad Cook, said Johnson County sheriff’s deputies contacted the family Tuesday after the body was discovered to confirm the clothing Cook was last seen wearing.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

“The description (of the body) fit what we last knew Bradley was wearing,” Cox said.

Cox said the deputies would not reveal any information about the cause of death or whether there were any signs of violence. They also did not confirm the body was male, he said. The family was told that more definitive information must await a medical examination planned for Wednesday.

The sheriff’s department said the body was discovered about 3:30 p.m. in the 9500 block of Sunflower Road.

Cox said that the area had been searched by law enforcement officers and civilian volunteers but that the search grid stopped at the north side of 95th Street. The body was found on private property on the south side of 95th Street, near Lexington Avenue. A person walking in the area saw the body and called authorities.

Cook left the home in Olathe he shared with his sister about 10:10 p.m. Oct. 20 without his cellphone or wallet. His motorcycle was found a couple of hours later left unlocked in a strip mall’s parking lot in De Soto, a few blocks from where the body was found Tuesday.

Family members said Cook’s disappearance was out of character for him.

Private Detective Reward Doubled in Aurora Abduction Case

The reward being offered to track down a man who tried to kidnap an 8-year-old girl from her bedroom in suburban Denver was doubled to $20,000 Tuesday as police tracked down leads.

Investigators say the man got in through an unlocked window early Monday morning and grabbed the girl. She screamed for help and was able to get away from the abductor just as her father ran outside to help her.

The father told police he saw the suspect speed away in a silver or grey BMW sedan in the alley that runs behind their house. Police Chief Dan Oates said the girl’s loud struggle to escape may have saved her life.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Oates said there is no indication the family was targeted and police are treating the case as an attempted stranger abduction, a rare crime. Investigators are studying surveillance videos of businesses, searching sex offender databases and also checking on whether there have been any other similar incidents elsewhere in the Denver area.

“We think there’s a predator out there. And he has to be caught, and he has to be stopped,” Oates said.

He said the girl talked to the man, but he wouldn’t elaborate.

The girl’s grandmother, Beatrice Padilla, told The Denver Post (http://bit.ly/1auOOiB ) the girl was doing her homework in her bunk bed in her first-floor bedroom just after midnight when the suspect entered and covered the girl’s mouth with his hand. She said another child was in the room but asleep at the time.

Oates said it’s likely the suspect saw the light on and had been watching the girl.

Police said they had received numerous leads by midday Tuesday and urged people to continue to call in any tips.

The girl’s home is in a residential neighborhood just outside Denver made up of a mix of single-family dwellings and apartments. The alley behind the house is near three apartment complexes and used by residents to access parking.

The suspect is described as a blond man, wearing a black winter jacket with a strong odor of cigarette smoke.

Neighbor Lawrence Chambers said the news was disturbing.

“I want to tell my neighbors: Protect your kids,” he said.

Missing Person Emily Lalinsky of Michigan

A Michigan mother pleaded for her daughter to return home Monday after the 15-year-old ran away with a family friend more than twice her age, leaving behind cellphones and a letter professing the couple’s love.

“Come home,” Lisa Schwartz said in a message to her daughter on Monday, according to The Detroit Free Press.

“What 37-year-old in their right mind runs away with a 15-year-old girl?” she said, according to Detroit’s WDIV.

Police are looking for 37-year-old Robert Messer and 15-year-old Emily Lalinsky, who disappeared together on Sunday.

Schwartz’s daughter Emily Lalinsky left their Plymouth Township, Mich., home Sunday with 37-year-old Robert Messer after telling her mother the two were going on a hiking trip.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

They left behind their cellphones and a letter explaining their actions.

“We are in love and cannot be apart from each other,” Messer wrote in the note broadcast by WDIV.  “This is sad to us but our love, though we’ve had to keep it a secret, has been the best part of both our lives. Please be happy for us.”

The second part of the letter was written by Lalinsky and said, “I was a great mom and everything and not to blame myself and that I couldn’t have stopped anything,” Schwartz told WDIV.

Schwartz told WDIV that she felt betrayed by the man who “was like a brother to me” and that the pair who met at church had never showed signs that they had feelings for one another.

“I think once he realizes the magnitude of what he has done, he might hurt himself, and I don’t know where that would leave her,” she said.

Both Lalinsky and Messer enjoy hiking, and they might have gone to a national park, Schwartz said.

Plymouth County police are treating the disappearance as a missing person case but did not have any leads and did not issue an Amber Alert, county police spokeswoman Jen Berezak said.

According to police, Messer drives a 1991 two-tone brown Ford truck and recently told colleagues he wanted to travel to Oregon or Idaho.

Wrongful Death Man Pleads Guilty to Murder in New Hanover County, NC

A man who served 30 years in prison for nine rape convictions in the 1970s pleaded guilty to the murder of a 24-year-old woman in New Hanover County Superior Court on Monday.

Andrew Bernard Adams, 57, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with the death of Latricia Ana Scott in January 2012.

Superior Court Judge Phyllis Gorham sentenced Adams to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Scott, a Cape Fear Community College student, was first reported missing Jan. 11, 2012, after she did not return home the day before. She was last seen at Adams’ home.

Two days later, the missing person investigation turned into a homicide investigation when detectives with the Wilmington Police Department found Scott’s body buried in the backyard of Adams’ Cowan Street home.

According to Assistant District Attorney Dru Lewis, Scott was found buried naked and had obvious trauma to her head and face. An autopsy report revealed she died from blunt-force trauma that the medical examiner found to be consistent with being struck by a hammer. Detectives also found a hammer in Adams’ room during their investigation, Lewis said.

Adams was arrested on Jan. 13, 2012, and charged with first-degree murder.

“The defendant, in his interview with detectives, initially denied killing and burying Latricia. He also admitted that he did both, claiming that it was an accident,” Lewis said.

According to District Attorney Ben David, Adams’ defense team argued that Adams was mentally retarded, which means the state could not pursue the death penalty. State and defense testing showed that Adams’ IQ was well below 70.

“Today’s plea ensures that one of the most evil defendants this area has ever seen will die in prison and will never be a free man,” David said. “Given the hideous nature of this crime and the defendant’s terrible criminal history, the state has always insisted that the defendant be punished to the maximum extent of the law. Today he was.”

James Payne, Adams’ defense attorney, said he agreed with Monday’s sentencing–specifically as it relates to Adams’ mental disability.

“From the defense point of view this is the exact enforcement of the law. The District Attorney’s Office took the law as it is with regard to mental retardation and applied it appropriately and joined us in an agreement with the state and before the court to impose the appropriate sentence,” Payne said.

Following Monday’s plea, Adams was scheduled to be taken to Craven County where he will plead guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree rape, David said. He will receive another life sentence for each offense under the sentencing law that was in effect in 1977.

Adams will serve his three life sentences in Central Prison in Raleigh.

According to David, Scott’s family is pleased that this is behind them, and they supported the court’s decision.

“Obviously they have lost a daughter and what I am constantly reminded in a case like this…is that today brings no joy, it just brings justice.

“In my almost 15 years in this office, and almost nine now as a district attorney, I can tell you that this is one of the very worst crimes I’ve seen and this is one of the worst criminal records I’ve ever seen on any defendant,” David said.
