Fraud Investigation Nelson County Man Accused of Scamming Alzheimer’s Patient

A man is in jail in Nelson County and police say his crime was heartless and his target, helpless.

They say the man had been scamming an elderly Alzheimer’s patient for nearly two years.

“A low point” is what people around Bardstown are saying about 30-year-old William Bartley. Police say back in October 2011 Bartley was hired by a 78-year-old man with Alzheimer’s to do some driveway work.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Since 2011, police say Bartley has taken advantage of the Elderly man’s disease, going back to his home multiple times and saying he never paid him for the work done.

Each time the man would give him more money. Just last week the man wrote Bartley a check for $460 after he claimed once again that he was never paid.

It was that incident that alerted the man’s family.

Officials say the family has checked his banking records and believe he has been duped out of $25,000 since 2011.

William Bartley was arrested Monday and now sits in a jail cell in Nelson County. But people like James Haydon who runs his own lawn mowing service, constantly worry that scams like this will affect them in the long run.

“They are going to be wondering ‘this guy mowing our grass, is he doing what he is supposed to be doing?” Haydon said.

But it is a battle this honest businessman says he is prepared to fight.

Barltey is charged with theft by deception and knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult.

Police say more arrests could come from this case.

Wrongful Death Jessamine County Police Ask for Help in Unsolved Murder

It’s been months since crime scene tape surrounded the Jessamine County home where 49-year-old Dale “Monty” Burgess was found shot to death.

No arrests have been made more than five months later, and investigators are asking for help to find the person responsible for Burgess’ murder that remains unsolved.

“There are a lot of pieces that still need to be put together. Without information, we can’t make a determination on what was motive behind this,” said Dep. Anthony Purcell.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

On April 5th, a family member found Burgess dead in his home on Elm Fork Road. Jessamine County investigators say the scene provided little evidence to go on. In the days after the murder, they say they interviewed some people of interest and received a few tips but nothing led to an arrest.

“We’re not ruling anything out unfortunately. We are missing a lot of things,” Dep. Purcell said.

Five months later, investigators need the community’s help finding who’s responsible and believe someone may hold valuable information, but might not know it.

“Anything that the public might know or even if they don’t think it’s directly related but somehow it just didn’t set right with them, if they’d give us a call. Let us at least take a look at it,” he said.

The Jessamine County Sheriff’s Office is focusing on any suspicious vehicles that may have been spotted the morning or early afternoon of April 5th.

“Most of the people who live in that area know who comes and goes. They might have seen someone who didn’t belong or something that didn’t set right with them. And now, looking back they think they may know a vehicle description that kind of seemed out of place for them,” Dep. Purcell said.

If you have any information about this shooting, call the Jessamine County Sheriff’s Department.

Wrongful Death Newlywed Pushed Husband off Glacier

A newlywed wife was charged Monday with killing her husband by pushing him off a cliff in Glacier National Park during an argument just a week after they got married.

Charging documents suggest Jordan Linn Graham, 22, was having second thoughts about getting married around the time the body of her husband, Cody Lee Johnson, 25, of Kalispell, was discovered.

Graham told an FBI agent that she and her husband had been arguing July 7 as they walked in the Loop Trail area of the park.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

At one point, she turned to walk away, but Johnson grabbed her arm, she said. She turned around, removed his hand from her arm and “due to her anger, she pushed Johnson with both hands in the back, and as a result, he fell face first off the cliff,” an affidavit states.

Johnson was reported missing July 8 when he failed to show up for work. Graham later reported that she had spotted his body.

Graham made an initial court appearance Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah C. Lynch on a charge of second-degree murder. She is currently in custody.

Her attorney, public defender Andrew Nelson, declined to comment.

Johnson’s family and friends were relieved after calling for an investigation since his body was recovered July 12.

“Two months probably isn’t very long for an FBI investigation, but when you’re waiting for answers, that’s a lifetime,” family friend Tracey Maness said.

Maness said Johnson was excited about his wedding and in love with Graham.

Graham initially told investigators that Johnson left their house late July 7 with unidentified friends in a dark-colored car with Washington state license plates.

That night, she texted a friend and said she was about to talk to Johnson about her reservations about having gotten married the previous weekend.

The friend, identified only by initials, told the FBI about receiving the text from Graham just before 9 p.m. in which Graham said, “Oh well, I’m going to talk to him.”

The friend responded, “I’ll pray for you guys.”

Graham replied, “But dead serious if u don’t hear from me at all again tonight, something happened.”

Another friend said Graham reported receiving an email July 10 saying Johnson had left with three friends, went hiking, had fallen and was dead.

The next day, Graham reported to park officials that she had spotted Johnson’s body. A ranger thought that was unusual, but Graham explained, “It was a place he wanted to see before he died,” authorities said.

Graham was interviewed July 16 and acknowledged lying about her husband’s death, authorities said.

Missing Person Body of Missing Man Found Near Fort Bragg

The body of a Fort Bragg man reported missing last week was found Sunday down a cliff along with a gun, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the MCSO, Patrick Guzman, 70, of Fort Bragg, was reported missing Sept. 3 after his vehicle, a white 1999 Cadillac Deville, was found unoccupied the day before with the engine running in a pullout along Highway 1 in Westport, several miles north of Fort Bragg.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Guzman was identified as the registered owner of the vehicle, and after unsuccessfully trying to contact him and his family members, the MCSO declared him a missing person.

At around 5 p.m. Sept. 8, Tony Reed, a reporter with the Fort Bragg Advocate-News, was examining the area where Guzman’s vehicle was located.

Using the telephoto lens on his camera, Reed reportedly saw a handgun on the steep bluff down to the ocean, and later located a white shoe in the rocks, approximately 150 feet below.

Reed then flagged down a passing California Department of Fish and Wildlife warden who called MCSO deputies. The deputies found Guzman’s body, requesting the aid of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department to retrieve it.

The handgun, which belonged to Guzman, was also recovered. According to the MCSO, the cause of Guzman’s death is still under investigation.

Accident Recosntruction Man Killed in Lexington Rollover Accident

The Fayette County coroner’s office has released the identity of a man who was killed in a violent rollover crash early Tuesday morning.

The accident happened at about 1 a.m. on Old Richmond Road near the intersection of Jack’s Creek Pike. Firefighters found a man, identified as Martin Rankin, 41, of Richmond, trapped in his truck, and by the time they could get him any help, he had already died.

http://liarcatchers.com/accident_reconstruction.html

Police say the truck was heading south when it left the road and hit a downed tree limb. That sent it flipping sideways into a utility pole and then a tree. The impact sent the truck rolling into the roadway where it finally stopped.

First responders say Rankin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was the only person inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pedophile Tracking Winston-Salem Man and Woman Charged

A Winston-Salem man and woman were charged Sunday with having sex with a 13-year-old girl and abusing her, court records show.

Ronald Perry Jr., 37, of East Fifth Street was charged with statutory sex offense and three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, arrest warrants say. A city police officer accused Perry of engaging in a sexual act with the girl from July 26 to Sept. 6 and taking indecent liberties with her in June and from July 26 to Sept. 6, the warrant said.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Patricia Renee Lee, 37, who lives in the same building as Perry, was charged with three counts of felony child abuse, an arrest warrant says. An officer accused Lee of allowing the girl to watch a man perform a sexual act on himself and allowing the girl to perform a sexual act on the man, the warrant said. The incidences are alleged to have occurred between July 26 and Sept. 6

Police didn’t describe a specific relationship between Perry and Lee, but they are neighbors, police said.

Perry and Lee were being held Monday in the Forsyth County Jail. Perry’s bond was set at $650,000, and Lee’s bond was set at $180,000. They are scheduled to appear in court Oct. 3.

Pedophile Tracking Jackson, Mississippi Man Goes to Trial

A man charged with having sex with a girl who was about 3 years old at the time is scheduled to go on trial Tuesday in federal court in Jackson.

Marco Laquin Rogers, 27, was charged in October after authorities said they found a video of him and another man having sex with the girl in a Jackson hotel room. The video, which investigators believe was made in May 2012, shows the girl crying out in pain as she’s assaulted, according to an affidavit filed in court records.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Another suspect in the case, Jemery Atral Hodges, has pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing Sept. 30.

Both men were indicted Nov. 7 on two counts each — sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and selling or buying of children.

Rogers’ lawyer didn’t respond to a message. He has been held without bond.

The sex trafficking charge in the indictment says the men transported the child “knowing that she would be caused to engage in commercial sex acts.” The other charge says they coerced a minor to engage in “sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction.”

The trafficking charge carries a penalty of 15 years to life in prison. The second charge is punishable by 15 to 30 years in behind bars.

Court records say the investigation began on Sept. 6, 2012, in Cambridge, Mass., after Hodges visited another man and showed him explicit images of children on his cellphone. The man kicked Hodges out of his house and called police, court records said.

Hodges told authorities Rogers had access to a 3-year-old girl for sexual acts, according to an affidavit filed in court records. The complaint also said Rogers traveled with the child to and from Atlanta, Jackson and Memphis, Tenn.

Court records say both men are from Mississippi, but Rogers had been living in Atlanta and Hodges was staying in Cambridge, Mass. The affidavit said Rogers worked at a hospital in Atlanta, but did not say which one or what kind of job he did.

The complaint that initially charged Rogers in October said authorities served him with a court order compelling him to allow agents to photograph scars on his stomach and right leg. The affidavit said the scars matched those on a man in the video.

Accident Reconstruction 2 Killed in Multi-Vehicle Collision in Shelby County

Two people were killed Monday in an accident involving six vehicles that shut down Interstate 64 for several hours.

The two men killed had apparently stopped to check on the drivers of the vehicles involved in an accident when they were hit.

The accident happened near mile marker 38 heading west in I-64 around 11:30 Monday. The initial accident happened when a semi side swiped a box truck, then went in the median with a third vehicle. The second accident happened when a second semi hit two other vehicles, a van and a company van, that had stopped on the left shoulder.

http://liarcatchers.com/accident_reconstruction.html

The victims have been identified as 71-year-old Charles Burtt of Broad Run, Virginia, and 33-year-old Jamaal Wood of Louisville.

Police say both Burtt and Wood were outside their vehicles at the time of impact.

The Shelby County coroner said their deaths will be ruled blunt force injuries sustained after being struck in a motor vehicle accident.

Police say Burtt’s wife witnessed him being struck. She was calling 911 when he was hit to tell them about the first accident they saw.

The coroner said the family planned to claim the body and go back to Virginia. Police say Wood was a brand new father and worked at SCM Life Oxygen in Louisville. Funeral arrangements for Burtt and Wood are pending.

Officials say that Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputies will be doing more investigation on Tuesday. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.

I-64 was reopened Monday around 10:00 p.m.

Missing Person Search Continues for Woodland Park, CO Teen

The last time her mother saw her, Alexandra “Ali” Ponte was in her Woodland Park home around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

They had argued over a Facebook post and Ali had gone to her room to cool off, but Chrissy Duis, her mother, did not realize she was gone until nearly two hours later.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Woodland Park police and the FBI have been searching for the teen, who was listed as a missing person. So far, no foulplay has been suspected, but that doesn’t make her mother feel any better.

“Nobody has heard anything in six days, we just want to know that she’s ok, alive, anything,” Duis said Monday.

The latest development in Ali’s disappearance surfaced over the weekend, when the owner of Serrano’s Mexican Bar and Grill, on east U.S. 24, confirmed to detectives that he and an employee spotted a girl matching Ali’s description at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday.

“They saw her walking on Baldwin Street, heading southwest toward U.S. 24,” Duis said. “They didn’t realize she was missing until they saw a flier and she had stuck in their mind because they thought it was uncommon to see a girl walking out that late.”

The circumstances leading up to Ali’s disappearance point to her running away from home, which her mother said the teen did once before, last Sept. That time, police found her within the hour and took her home. This time around, as days have passed, Duis said she can’t find any peace.

Duis told The Gazette that after their argument, she told Ali to go to her bedroom and think things through. Around 9 p.m., she got a call from a friend’s mother letting her know she had dropped Ali off at nearby Memorial Park, to meet up with a friend for a “sleepover.”

“I called and checked on the sleepover and the girl’s father didn’t know anything about it,” Duis said. “If Ali was meeting someone to pick her up, it wasn’t at the park because police went back to look for her and they couldn’t find her.”

Police and FBI investigators have tried pinging Ali’s phone but her mother said it has been off since Thursday.

“There was definitely one person with whom she communicated repeatedly when she went missing, and that person has been questioned, but nothing has come of it,” Duis said.

So far the Woodland Park Police Department has received lots of calls and tips regarding Ali and they have pursued all of them, Duis said. She has passed out fliers, along with family and friends, to the public and businesses in Woodland Park hoping someone will spot the teenager and lead to her recovery.

“I really want to keep her fresh in everyone’s minds,” Duis said. “If anyone sees her, please call her name, get her attention, keep in mind she could be wearing a hat or may try to conceal herself if she is hiding.”

In an interview with The Gazette Monday, Duis’ voice broke from grief over her missing daughter.

“I just want her to know that she’s loved beyond measure. I’m afraid she’ll stay away because she thinks she’s going to be in trouble, but I just want her to come home, to know that she’s safe. At least call, or text, let us know she’s alive.”

Ali was last seen wearing a bright blue hoodie and skinny jeans, police said. She was also wearing a grey and black “Nike” backpack.

Ali had her hair pulled back in a pony tail and she no longer wears braces, her mother said.

Ali is 5-foot-5 and 115 pounds. She has a fair complexion, brown hair and green eyes.

Anyone with information on her whereabouts can call Detective Sean Goings at the Woodland Park Police Department at (719) 687-9262.
