Cold Case Man Indicted in Clark County Murder

Lonnie Martin, a suspect in two separate homicide cases, was indicted for murder this afternoon in Clark County for the 1995 death of his cousin.
Clark County’s grand jury was the first to indict the 39-year-old Stanton resident. He is also facing murder charges in Montgomery County for the July death of Winchester resident Kyla Kline. The Montgomery County grand jury is scheduled to meet Friday.
An arraignment has not been scheduled for Clark Circuit Court.

Winchester Police reopened the investigation into the Oct. 29, 1995 death of Joseph B. Martin following Lonnie Martin’s arrest for Kline’s death. When Winchester Police detectives interviewed Lonnie Martin in jail, he reportedly made statements about Joseph Martin’s death, Winchester Police Sgt. Tom Beall said.
At the time, police suspected that there was foul play when 21-year-old Joseph Martin fell from an overpass on Washington Street before being struck by an oncoming train. No one was charged at the time because police did not have enough evidence, Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said previously.
After their interview with Lonnie Martin, detectives reviewed the original case notes from 1995 and reinterviewed witnesses. With the additional information, detectives field a warrant in August charging Lonnie Martin with his cousin’s death. Police would not elaborate on a motive.
Lonnie Martin is still incarcerated in the Montgomery County Regional Jail on a $1.5 million bond. He has not appeared in court in Clark County since his arrest.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office arrested Lonnie Martin for Kyla Kline’s death after they found her body buried in a shallow grave on a farm July 28. Kline had been missing since July 3 when relatives saw her in Winchester.
An autopsy determined that Kline had been stabbed four times and was struck once in the face.
