Identity Theft Senior Scam Alert

Identity theft is a hot topic because everyone has heard of it. Yet most people do not know exactly how it can happen.

It’s all about checkbook safety.

Seniors vs. Crime sees a lot of scams directed toward those over the age of 50. Crooks know that people of a certain age prefer to use their checkbooks instead of debit cards or credit cards. With all the changes in electronic banking, there are a few things anyone who writes personal checks should know.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

First, everything needed to set up an electronic transfer of funds is printed on your check: your name, your address, your account number, the bank’s address and the bank’s routing number. Even if you were to write VOID over the check, your check can still be used to set up an account and transfer funds from your account to another, or to use online banking sites like PayPal because all this information would still be legible.

Second, be wary of a check that you were not expecting. Some are rewards, some are from winnings, some may seem like rebates. These checks will have your name and address printed on them and you are supposed to endorse them.

But look closely. Many of these checks will have a disclaimer in tiny writing that informs you that, by endorsing and depositing, you have enrolled yourself into some kind of program and the originator is now authorized to transfer payment from your account for said service. These fees are typically monthly and can range from $5 to $50.

This is possible because when you deposit a check instead of cashing it, you sign and add your account number to the back of the check. When it processes the check for funds, your bank will then add its routing number and address under your signature. The same information that can be obtained by writing a check can also be obtained by depositing a check, leading to identity theft.

Finally, credit card information can be stolen. Financial institutions are very diligent about checking suspicious charges on a credit card. If someone contacts you that your card may have been compromised, do not assume that it is someone from your bank. Let the caller know that you will be calling the fraud line phone number listed on the back of your card.

Call that number and ask about your account. If your account has been flagged for suspicious activity, anyone at the institution will be able to verify any issue. NEVER give information over the phone to someone who has called you. When you initiate contact, you will know to whom you are speaking.

Remember, you have 30 days to dispute a charge on your credit card. Check your statements as soon as they arrive. If there is a charge you do not remember, call your bank. After 30 days, the charge can no longer be disputed.

The key to being safe is being educated and aware. You can contact Seniors vs. Crime if you have questions about scams by calling (904) 721-6516 or (800) 203-3099, or by going online to Seniorsvscrime.com and clicking on the “Request Help” link on the left.

Missing Person Margarita Chaparro of Hollister, CA

Police in Hollister are looking for a 14-year-old girl who they believe might be headed to Mexico in the company of a 42-year-old man.

Margarita Chaparro is reported by police as endangered and missing from her home in San Benito County.

Detectives say Chaparro could be in the company of Jose Carlos Arellano, whom they are now calling a suspect in this case.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Police say Arellano is driving a silver four-door Chevrolet Silverado Texas Edition model pickup truck.

The Hollister Police Department has notified U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and the California Highway Patrol. An Endangered Missing Person Advisory has been sent out to all agencies throughout the state by the CHP-Emergency Notification and Tactical Alert Center in Sacramento.

Arellano is reportedly a family friend who was seen with Chaparro recently, according to police, who say all attempts to contact Arellano have been unsuccessful.

Chaparro is described as a Hispanic female, 14 years old, 5’2”, 115 pounds, with brown hair
and brown eyes, last seen wearing a light blue blouse and light blue ripped jeans with black-and-white low-top Converse shoes.

Arellano is described as a Hispanic male, 5’10”, light skin, with a medium build.

Missing Person Bryce Laspisa of Santa Clarita Valley, CA

Some Santa Clarita Valley residents spent much of their Labor Day Sunday helping a Laguna Niguel couple search for their missing son after his crashed SUV was found at the bottom of a 15-foot ravine near Castaic Lake Main Boat Ramp early Friday morning.

Karen and Michael Laspisa have not heard from their 19-year-old son, Bryce, since shortly after 2 a.m. Friday when he told them he told them he was too tired to drive.

“He told me ‘I got off the I-5 and I’m in a suburban area. I’m going to sleep in my car,’” said Karen Laspisa.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html
Now her son is the subject of a missing person’s investigation pursued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

“We searched for 10 hours,” Sgt. Roger Wallace of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau said Sunday, referring to search by the Santa Clarita Valley Search and Rescue Team.

Help continued Sunday, however. “I’ve been on social media talking to people who want to help,” Laspisa said. “People have been contacting me all day. People are offering to go and put up flyers.”

Details of her son’s actions prior to the crash, she said, remain a mystery despite constant cell phone communication, a GPS locator and help from a “good Samaritan.”

Shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, Bryce left Sierra College in Rocklin north of Sacramento and began his drive to Laguna Niguel.

At 5:30 a.m. Friday, officers of the California Highway Patrol found his 2003 Toyota Highlander SUV on its side at the bottom of a 15-foot ravine on the Castaic Lake Main Boat Launch access road. The back window had been shattered.

What troubles Karen Laspisa most, she said, is that her son left his cell phone, laptop and wallet inside the vehicle.

“There was someblood but they don’t know if it’s Bryce’s,” she said, adding investigators are now examining it for clues.

She shared some “troubling” details she’s learned about her son’s roadtrip home.

On Wednesday at about 1:30 p.m., Bryce told his mother he was going to break up with his girlfriend with whom he “had been so in love” for the past five months, she said.

She also received information that Bryce had taken a pill — or pills — normally prescribed for children suffering from attention deficit disorder.

When she told him she was going to fly up to the college to see him, he reportedly said: “Mom, do not make any flight. I have a lot to talk to you about.’”

At 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, he ran out of gas and called roadside assistance from the Buttonwillow Rest Area west of Bakersfield, a fact confirmed by the credit card company.

The roadside serviceman, who delivered three gallons of gasoline, offered to check on Bryce at the mother’s request.

“He said Bryce looked OK but his eyes were a little red,” she said.

A second check by the serviceman revealed Bryce spent 10 hours near the rest area, ending up on Lagoon Drive, five miles away.

At 10:30 p.m. Thursday, he told her, “I’m just chilling. I’m going to hang with friends later,” she said.

Thirty minutes later, he bought a $1.71 beverage from a Shell gas station near Buttonwillow.

Friday at 2:08 a.m. was the last time he spoke to his mother.

Anyone with information should call Wallace at 661-272-2594.
