Missing Person Iowa Man Reported Missing Found Safe in Montana

Daniel Landgrebe, who was believed to be in Montana after he was reported missing by his mother when she hadn’t heard from him in nearly two weeks, has turned up safe in Big Sky.

Daniel was said to be heading from Salt Lake City to the “Rainbow Family” gathering near Jackson in southwest Montana.

His mother Susanne says that that her son left home to travel and write a book; he didn’t bring a cellphone because he wanted to live “off the grid” during his travels, but did call home every three to five days.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Susanne had been working with an investigator and Daniel’s photo made headlines across Montana and his hometown in Iowa in an effort to find him.

On Saturday afternoon, Susanne says that she finally received a phone call from Daniel.

Susanne said that Daniel “feels terrible” for causing such worry, and that he had given someone his mother’s phone number eight days ago and asked that person to call her and say that Daniel was OK; that person apparently never called.

When Daniel called his mother on Sunday, he promised to send her a cell phone picture immediately; he used the cell phone of a gas station attendant to take the above photo and sent it to her.

Susanne said, “When I heard Daniel’s voice at the other end, I was so overwhelmed! I asked him if he had any idea that the whole nation was looking for him and he said he didn’t. He asked people in the gas station, ‘Hey, have you guys heard of Daniel Landgrebe?’ They said , ‘Yes, he is missing.’ He said, ‘That is me!’ They all laughed in the gas station.”

Daniel told his mom that he would be checking in with her on a more frequent basis from now on

Wrongful Death Oldham County Woman Killed Boyfriend

An Oldham County woman said she killed her live-in boyfriend with a hatchet early Saturday, according to county police.

Gail G. Kelley, 51, was in custody following the incident in the 9200 block of Margaret Ann Court, located near Pewee Valley, Oldham County police said.

The cause of death for Michael T. Evans, 44, is yet to be determined by the Kentucky medical examiner’s office, police said.

Kelley told police she struck Evans in the head with the hatchet, according to a police news release. A neighbor said the couple had been fighting the day before.

Police said they received a call about a possible homicide at 5:30 a.m. When police arrived, the release said, they had to force their way into the home, where they found Evans dead with an apparent head injury.

Kelley was taken into custody without incident and formal charges are pending, police said. Police Chief Greg Smith said police were investigating what led up to the incident.

Dana Evola, who has rented the house next door for two years, said the couple often fought. She said Kelley told her “she was getting beat up” and was a victim of domestic abuse. Evola said she often saw bruises on her, and several times called police at Kelley’s request.

She said she believed that Evans was employed at an auto plant, and that Kelley stayed home. They had no children together and weren’t married, Evola said, but Kelley often played with Evola’s children.

“They were arguing all day yesterday,” said Evola, who sat on her front porch, a dozen yards from a police forensics truck parked in her neighbor’s driveway.

Oldham police ask that anyone with information call (502) 222-1300 or contact them at www.oldhamcountypolice.com.

Identity Theft Authorities Warn of Scam in Mississippi

Authorities say a man is impersonating a Hinds County sheriff’s deputy to steal people’s identities.

U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis and Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis sent a news release Friday warning the public about the scam.

The news release says the suspect claims to be a deputy who has an arrest warrant for someone in the home he calls. He threatens people with arrest if they don’t provide their social security and driver’s license numbers over the telephone.

Several metro area residents have reported receiving the calls.

Authorities advise the public not give out personal identification information over the telephone to someone they don’t know — even if that person claims to be a police officer.

Missing Person Search Continues for Kevin Glenn Bowman of Conover, NC

Teams of searchers spent Saturday combing through densely wooded areas searching for any sign of Kevin Glenn Bowman, a 33-year-old Conover man who has not been seen by his family for a week.

Bowman was reported missing on Tuesday. His family last saw him on June 30 when they met for dinner at the home of his sister, Julie Bolick, in Hickory. Bowman left around 9 p.m. He did not show up for work at Carroll Leather on Monday or Tuesday, and staff at the business contacted Bolick Tuesday morning to check on him, at which time Bolick reported him missing to police.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Bowman’s car was found parked in front of his apartment on 3rd Street Place SW. The door to his apartment was locked. Police entered the apartment to find no sign of a struggle and Bowman’s belongings undisturbed.

Conover Police Chief Steven Brewer said the search concentrated on the area between Bowman’s apartment and Carroll Leather, which is less than two miles from the apartment. Densely wooded areas between the two sites were the focus of much of the search.

Brewer said there was no evidence to suggest foul play, but based on information collected, Bowman’s disappearance is highly unusual. “It’s very odd, him being the private person he was and a creature of habit, to lose contact with his family and work,” he said.

About 40 volunteers and five tracking dogs working with Community United Effort (CUE) Center for Missing Persons searched for traces of Bowman. Advance crews scouted the area Friday before the full search on Saturday.

Monica Caison, CUE’s founder and executive director, said the search was about eliminating spaces where there was reason to think Bowman might be found. Teams were looking for items including glasses, a watch or articles of clothing.

Bowman’s parents, Grady and Judy Bowman, and Bolick were at the search command post at Conover’s Public Works Department. Teams scoured over maps of the search area to make the entire area was examined.

The Bowmans described their son as a quiet and private person. The family meets for dinner together every Wednesday and Sunday, and Grady Bowman said they usually talk on the phone a couple times a week.

“He’s just your average Joe,” Bolick said of her brother.

Judy Bowman thanked the community for an outpouring of donations, support and prayer, and asked that members of the community continue to keep her son in their prayers. “You say ‘This couldn’t be happening—not to me, not to my family.’ But it does,” she said.

Kevin Bowman is a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has brown hair, brown eyes and was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. Anyone with information about Bowman is asked to contact the Conover Police Department at 828-464-4698 or CUE at 910-343-1131 or 910-232-1687.

Identity Theft Montgomery Postal Worker Found Guilty

A Montgomery postal worker has been found guilty of fraud, identity theft and embezzlement, according to George L. Beck’s Office.

Vernon Harrison was found guilty of one count of conspiring to file false claims, eight counts of mail fraud, eight counts of aggravated identity theft and six counts of embezzlement.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

The report says evidence presented during trial showed Harrison, who previously worked as a U.S. postal service carrier, was part of a fraud conspiracy that filed false tax returns from various locations using stolen identities.

The fraudulent tax refunds were sent to debit cards, which were mailed to addresses on Harrison’s postal route. In exchange for cash, Harrison stole more than 100 debit cards from the mail and provided them to co-conspirators.

During their investigation, officers found more than 100 envelopes for debit cards that had been mailed to addresses on Harrison’s postal route while searching his home and observed him failing to deliver Turbo Tax cards that were in the mail.

Harrison faces up to 10 years in prison for the conspiracy count, 20 years for each mail fraud count, five years for each mail embezzlement count and a mandatory two-year sentence for the aggravated identity theft counts. He could also be subject to fines, forfeiture, and mandatory restitution.

Drug Dog Sweep 27 lbs of Coke Found in Gas Tank at Border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the El Paso, Texas port of entry seized 27.2 pounds of cocaine yesterday. The estimated street value of the seized contraband is $870,400.

“We are using every tool we have to stop smugglers,” said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso Port Director. “CBP officer expertise, high technology, and canine support all played a role in making this seizure.”

http://liarcatchers.com/drugdogsweeps.html

The seizure was made at approximately 4:15 p.m. Tuesday when a 1998 Nissan Altima entered the Bridge of the Americas international crossing from Mexico. A CBP officer at the primary inspection booth selected the vehicle for a secondary exam after detecting a number of issues with the driver and vehicle. CBP drug sniffing dog “Dora” alerted to the gas tank area of the car during a secondary exam. CBP officers scanned the vehicle with the Z-Portal X-ray system and spotted anomalies in the fuel tank. CBP officers removed 22 cocaine-filled bundles from the gas tank.

CBP officers took custody of the driver of the car, 21-year-old Javier Alfonso Perez of El Paso, Texas. He was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents to face federal charges in connection with the failed smuggling attempt.
