Private Detective: Firefighters Find Human Skull in Clay County

Firefighters preparing to battle a large forest fire in Clay County on Tuesday evening found a partial human skull.

Crews with the Kentucky Division Of Forestry made the disturbing discovery as they were on their way to the fire that burned 25 to 30 acres in the area of Ephram Creek.

“I would imagine that’s not something that they’re prepared to find while they’re out there fighting a fire,” Danny Finley, the Clay County Coroner told LEX 18’s Josh Breslow. “My impression is that they’ve been at that particular location at least a couple of years.”

The remains could have even been there for decades, investigators said.

They will now go to a forensic pathologist.

“Once the pathologist examines the partial skull, they’ll then let us know approximately how old it is, how long it’s been in the elements. And things of that nature. And that’ll give us something to go on,” said Trooper Lloyd Cochran with Kentucky State Police.

While the skull was found about 80 yards from Ephram Creek Cemetery, the coroner said he was fairly certain the skull did not come from there.

Officials said they will likely search the area around Ephram Creek for additional human remains.
