Police in Edgewood say that a 10-year-old girl did exactly what she was supposed to after a stranger attempted to kidnap her.
It happened on Monday. The girl told our sister station WLWT that she had been taught how to handle these types of stranger danger. The girl told a reporter that she had walked her cousin home when a man pulled up in a white van alongside her on Roundhill Court.
“I felt something grab at my arm and said, ‘Come with me your mother’s in the hospital. You need to come see her.’ I said, ‘Well that can’t really be right because my mom’s behind bars.’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, I meant your dad.’ And pulled my arm closer and said, ‘Get in the car with me now.’ So I just kind of took off running,” the girl told WLWT.

A neighborhood friend called 911 after the girl told him what happened. The girl told police that the driver sounded young and that the van was square-bodied and looked like a work van.
The girl’s stepmother told WLWT that they had frequently talked about stranger danger but she had hoped the girl would never have to use the lessons.
“I can’t believe it actually happened. You talk about it and you think about it but you don’t think that’s going to happen to your child. It was scary,” the stopmother told WLWT. “I told her I was very, very proud of her.”
An elementary school is less than half-a-mile from where the incident happened.
