Private Detective: Pulaski Co. Man Charged With Kidnapping After School Bus Incident

A security camera inside of a Pulaski County school bus was recording on the afternoon of September 10th, when a car in front of the bus stopped suddenly during a turn into the Fox Haven subdivision.

The video shows the driver of that car walked up to the school bus and said something. The bus driver then continued on his route.

A short time later, the car showed up again but this time, it blocked the bus for an estimated six minutes.

“I’ve got a car here blocking the road. I need you to send a police officer. He’s got me blocked intentionally,” the bus driver is heard saying.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said they arrested James Long on Wednesday, charging him with 20 counts of kidnapping and 23 counts of wanton endangerment.

“We want to make sure that people understand that we’re not gonna tolerate that kind of behavior,” Superintendent Steve Butcher told LEX 18’s Josh Breslow. “The guy had no child on the bus and never had a child on the bus, so you really don’t know why he did what he did.”

After watching the security video, Superintendent Butcher said it appeared Long slammed on his brakes in an attempt to cause a crash. He said Long screamed at the bus driver in front of the children and, at one point, the kids ran to the back of the bus thinking Long might be armed.

Investigators said Long claimed he was confronting the bus driver for speeding and following too closely. The superintendent denied the suspect’s claims and called the bus driver a veteran who did the right thing to protect the children.
