Prestonsburg Police confirm that an officer was shot in the chest overnight and the shooter is now in custody.
Officer Adam Dixon was shot in the chest and was airlifted to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia. Police say the incident started as a car chase. The pursuit led to a residence on Abbott Creek, where the accused, Robert Powers, 28, of Auxier, continued to flee the police on foot. When confronted by officers at a residence, Powers refused to comply with the verbal commands given by the police officers.

A Prestonsburg City Police Officer then deployed his issued Taser, which was not effective. Powers continued to ignore officer’s commands, and produced a firearm, shooting Dixon in the chest.
Officers returned fire from their service weapons in response to Powers’ actions. Powers managed to then barricade himself inside a residence on Abbott Road where a standoff lasted overnight.
The Kentucky State Police, Pikeville Post, is asking all non-emergency personnel to avoid KY1427 Abbott Creek in the Prestonsburg community of Floyd County. School bus pickup in the area has been delayed.
Powers was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries due to gunshot wounds. He has been charged with Attempted Murder of a Police Officer. A woman in the home was also taken to the hospital.
