Private Detective: Man Arrested After Falsely Reporting Family’s Murder

A Casey County man is in trouble after police say he falsely reported the murder of his family and caused a standoff situation.

According to the Lebanon Enterprise, law enforcement responded to a call on July 31, after a man claimed someone was shooting at him and killed his entire family at their home in Marion County.

Ronnie D. Johnson, 31, of Liberty was arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident and for public intoxication. According to witnesses, Johnson wandered onto a nearby property on Rush Branch Road.

The home is owned by Marion County resident Jon Michael. Michael told the paper that he and his husband, Charlie, saw Johnson stumbling up the driveway around 8 p.m.

Johnson had a loaded gun.

While Charlie was on the phone with a 911, Michael approached Johnson and asked for the gun  According to Michael, that’s when Johnson said, “He’s after me and he’s already murdered my entire family.”

Michael managed to get the gun out of Johnson’s hand and held him until police arrived.  For the next hour, Michael said he and Charlie talked to Johnson and the 911 operator.

“We kept the young man in the kitchen of the cabin, talking to him and the 911 operator to keep him occupied while trying to glean information for the 911 operator who was on the line with the sheriff’s department and state police,” Michael told the Lebanon Enterprise.

The situation led to a standoff. Police blocked the road for three miles and brought in 10 SWAT officers.

Michael informed the 911 operator that he was armed and would exit the residence with his gun held above his head, not wanting to leave his guns in the house with Johnson.

Once Michael and Charlie were safely out of the house, the police discovered Johnson’s story was false and arrested him. The man Johnson claimed had killed his entire family was actually lodged in the Pulaski County Detention Center.

“This could have turned out badly on several fronts, but it didn’t,” Michael said. “Thanks to a great 911 operator, wish I knew her name, because she was first rate and stuck with us for the entire time, and a very professional response from Jimmy Clements and the sheriff’s department and the Kentucky State Police. Kudos all around.”
