A man was caught on surveillance footage stealing a gun from the Cabela’s in Lexington.
Cabela’s is still a relatively new fixture in Lexington’s Hamburg area.
Surveillance video shows one man getting a store employee to open a glass case and remove a handgun from the fun library for him to check out.
Police say that while the man distracted the worker, he put the gun in his back pocket.

Police say that he didn’t immediately leave and he even left the tag for the gun sticking out of his pocket.
“You walk into a place like Cabela’s, and they’ve got a camera in every corner of that place,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department. “He looks right at the camera on one occasion.”
The theft went undetected for a few weeks, but when the store did its gun inventory, they realized one gun was gone.
A quick check of the surveillance video revealed who took the gun.
“Anytime we have a gun stolen, the first thing that comes to our mind is, ‘why is this guy desperate enough to want to steal this weapon?’,” said Detective Thomas. Detectives wonder if he stole the weapon for money or if he plans to use it.
