Fraud Investigation Scammers Calling Offering Money and Cars

LEX 18 is putting out a consumer watch alert after reports that scammers offering free money and cars are calling Lexington residents incessantly.

Roxanne Taylor cares for elderly patients, and she’s often responsible for answering the phone. So when she received a phone call that was too good to be true – she knew something was up.

“(Monday) afternoon we got a phone call and the gentleman said we had won $2.5 million dollars and a new car,” said Taylor. The only catch was, “all he had to do was to put $500 on his credit card and it would all be delivered.

Fortunately, Taylor knew better. “I told him we weren’t interested, ” she said. But it didn’t end there, and Taylor said she received another call Tuesday morning, this time with a different voice. “He said he had won $500 dollars and a new Mercury, and he needed to go to the store and get a card for $99 dollars,” she said.

Even though Taylor didn’t fall for it – she fears others just will. “I just feel sorry for especially older people who don’t understand it’s a scam,” she said.

LEX 18 tried to call the number back ourselves, but there was no answer.

A few red flags you should keep an eye out for – out of country or unidentified numbers and of course, if someone calls and asks for money, you know its wrong because if you’ve won something you wont have to pay for it.
