Private Detective: Detectives Looking for Men Connected With Multiple Car Break-Ins

Over the past two months, police in Lexington have been getting reports of people breaking into vehicles and then using stolen credit cards.

Surveillance footage from a convenience store shows the man police say used credit cards stolen from cars.

Detectives say that the man is working with another man.

“They’re riding around together in a black four-door passenger car,” said Detective Mark Thomas with the Lexington Police Department.

The car was recently caught on surveillance footage and police say it appears to have a spare tire on the front passenger’s side.

Detectives say that the car break-ins are not confined to a particular neighborhood or even a particular part of town.

“They’ve been breaking into these cars and stealing any kind of valuables they can get their hands on and then again, any kind of credit cards they can get, they’re using them almost immediately,” said Detective Thomas.

Detective Thomas said that the two are using the cards at convenience stores and Walmart to purchase gift cards.

Police claim that the two are responsible for at least 20 car break-ins.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest.

Private Detective: Thieves Break Into Lexington Non-Profit on Christmas

Police in Lexington are investigating a burglary at a business aimed to help those with special needs.

Police say that surveillance footage shows the two thieves throwing a heavy rock through the glass door of Employment Solutions off Whipple Court on Christmas Day.

Police say that the thieves stole two tablets, along with two flat screen TVs, stereo equipment, and a radio.

Volunteers at the non-profit, Employment Solutions, found the damage at the facility on Christmas afternoon.

“They must’ve been pretty desperate for gifts for their family or something and so, I feel bad that they felt the need to do that on Christmas, hurt other people for their gain,” said Nicole Griffith, the Director of Express and Wellness.

Several walls were damaged when the thieves removed the TVs from them.

Volunteers at Employment Solutions tell LEX 18 that the damage should be fixed in the coming weeks so they can get back to utilizing the facility to its fullest.

Police are actively investigating this as a burglary.

Fraud Investigation BBB Releases Annual List of Top Scams

The Better Business Bureau has released its annual list of most popular scams in 2016.

Reports to BBB Scam Tracker in 2016 confirmed that tax scams impersonating the IRS are still the top scam, despite a huge drop in reports after a September police raid in Mumbai, India. The list was compiled based on more than 30,000 scam reports filed by consumers on bbb.org/scamtracker, a free interactive online tool launched last year by the BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Not all of those consumers lost money, as many recognized the scam before being victimized but reported it anyway to help warn others. Other Americans, including residents in Kentucky, have lost millions of dollars to the scam.

The top three scams on the 2016 list – tax scams, debt collection scams, and sweepstakes/prizes/gifts scams – were the same as in 2015.

New to the top ten are online purchase scams (#4) and phishing scams (#10). Online purchase scams were common in 2015 as well, but this scam type was not added as a BBB Scam Tracker category until 2016.

Employment scams (#5) are also new to the top ten, but only because work-from-home scams, previously a separate category, were included. Another change was the drop of tech support scams from #4 last year to #7 this year.

Scam Type Scam Reports Percentage Last Year
Tax Scams (IRS and CRA) 7,530 25.0 24.0
Debt Collections 2,456 8.2 8.3
Sweepstakes/Prizes/Gifts 2,102 7.0 8.0
Online Purchase 1,891 6.3
Employment 1,773 5.9
Government Grant 1,453 4.8 5.7
Tech Support 1,382 4.6 6.0
Advance Fee Loan 965 3.2 3.8
Fake Check/Money Order 872 2.9 2.4
Phishing 776 2.6

Wrongful Death Louisiana Woman Arrested For Abandoning Newborn Linked to Hot Car Death

A Louisiana woman arrested for allegedly leaving her newborn infant in a trash can at a Walmart was also arrested in the 2009 death of a toddler in a hot car.

Kyandrea Thomas was arrested Saturday, December 24 by the New Roads Police Department after allegedly leaving her newborn infant in a trash can at a local Walmart in New Roads.

Police believe Thomas gave birth to a baby girl in the store’s bathroom before throwing her in the trash and leaving the store. Pointe Coupee Chief Deputy Coroner Joe Gannon told WAFB that had police not arrived when they did, the baby would be dead.

While it remains unclear why a mother would abandon her child, police say it is not the first time Thomas has been arrested. Court records show that Thomas was linked to another horrible crime in 2009.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Thomas and another woman, Michelle Veals, were both indicted on negligent homicides charges in connection with the death of Damiyn McElveen, 3. Criminal charges for the owner of the daycare, Wanda Connor, were dropped in 2012. Thomas and Veals were both sentenced to five years of probation and 10,000 hours of community service after pleading guilty in the case.

The two women were employed at a daycare called Wanda’s Kids World in Baton Rouge. The young girl was found dead in a van on July 1, 2009 after being left inside for six hours with temperatures outside of 98 degrees.

The daycare was closed following McElveen’s death.

Thomas faces attempted second-degree murder charges for abandoning her newborn in Walmart. The baby has been given the temporary name, Olivia, by the first responders who rescued her. She is currently listed as stable at a Baton Rouge hospital.
