Private Detective: Couple Sentenced For Racist Birthday Party Threats

A Georgia couple was sentenced to 35 years total Monday for their role in terrorizing a black child’s birthday party.

Authorities described Jose Torres and Kayla Norton as “white supremacists.” Police say the couple were in a group with about a dozen other people who drove trucks flying Confederate flags past a home where a black child’s birthday party was being held in July 2015.

Officials say Torres and Norton yelled racial slurs and threatened to kill partygoers, including the children. Torres pointed a shotgun at the victims before police arrived.

Torres and Norton were both found guilty in a trial Monday. They were in tears nearly the entire hearing.

Before the judge sentenced the couple, family members took the stand to talk about the pair, who have three young kids together.

Norton stood afterward and said she accepted responsibility and that it was the worst decision of her life not to walk away when she had the chance.

“And we didn’t go home, and I don’t know why,” she said. “But I want you all to know that is not me. That is not him. I would never walk up to you and say those words to you, and I’m so sorry that happened to you. I am so sorry.”

The apology caused some to break down and even leave the courtroom, but one mother stood up and testified.

“You stayed, and you affected my life and you affected my children’s lives,” she said. ” But, I forgive you. I forgive all of you. I’m not a mean-spirited person. I forgive you,” she said.

When the judge sentenced the couple, he called their crimes hate-filled and racially motivated.

Torres was sentenced to 20 years, with 13 of those years to be served in prison.

Norton received a 15-year sentence, with six of those years to be served in prison.

Private Detective: Family Targeted After Deadly Hit and Run

The wife of a Scott County man killed in a hit and run said that her family has been the target of harassment.

Don Savage’s funeral was less than a week ago, and already his family says that the driver of a truck is antagonizing them in front of their home.

Kathy Savage said that their family moved into their dream home in the Fall of 2015. Last Monday, police say 46-year-old Don was trying to get two teens from revving up their engines and spinning their tires in front of his home. Kathy says that is when 18-year-old Taylor Putty and another teen hit Savage with a truck and fled the scene.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Kathy told LEX 18 that big trucks have been driving recklessly past their home for over a year now. Kathy said that teens loiter in trucks nearby. She said that they will drive on lawns in the neighborhood and steal flood lights and trail cameras meant to deter the drivers.

“There’s 60 homes on that street and many young families,” she said.

Monday afternoon, Kathy said a man driving a white Dodge truck with bright green neon lights on the top of it kept squealing his tires in front of their home. The truck had a black undercarriage.

“ A white truck drove by the house went to the cul-de-sac and starting doing a burn-out in front of the house,” said Kathy.

She said that she believes this was intentional.

“If anybody knows who did this, let us know. This has to stop, it absolutely has to stop. One person has been killed already. We can’t have this, it’s not right,” said Kathy.

The family wants anyone who can identify the driver to come forward and tell who he is. Scott County Deputies are also looking for the truck and have increased patrols in the Westwood neighborhood.

Fraud Investigation IRS Releases List of Dirty Dozen Tax Scams

It’s tax season.

Time to fill out your 2016 tax return.

It’s also the time of year the Internal Revenue Service releases their “dirty dozen” list of tax scams.

The Internal Revenue Service today announced the conclusion of its annual “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams. The annual list highlights various schemes that taxpayers may encounter throughout the year, many of which peak during tax-filing season. Taxpayers need to guard against ploys to steal their personal information, scam them out of money or talk them into engaging in questionable behavior with their taxes.

“We continue to work hard to protect taxpayers from identity theft and other scams,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “Taxpayers can and should stay alert to new schemes which seem to constantly evolve. We urge them to do all they can to avoid these pitfalls – whether old or new.”

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

This is the third year the IRS has highlighted its Dirty Dozen list in separate releases over 12 business days. Taxpayers are encouraged to review the list in a special section on IRS.gov and be on the lookout for these con games.

Perpetrators of illegal schemes can face significant fines and possible criminal prosecution. IRS Criminal Investigation works closely with the Department of Justice to shut down scams and prosecute the criminals behind them. Taxpayers should keep in mind that they are legally responsible for what is on their tax return even if it is prepared by someone else. Be sure the preparer is up to the task. For more see the Choosing a Tax Professional page.

Here is a recap of this year’s “Dirty Dozen” scams:

Phishing: Taxpayers need to be on guard against fake emails or websites looking to steal personal information. The IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers via email about a bill or refund. Don’t click on one claiming to be from the IRS. Be wary of emails and websites that may be nothing more than scams to steal personal information. (IR-2017-15)

Phone Scams: Phone calls from criminals impersonating IRS agents remain an ongoing threat to taxpayers. The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams in recent years as con artists threaten taxpayers with police arrest, deportation and license revocation, among other things. (IR-2017-19)

Identity Theft: Taxpayers need to watch out for identity theft especially around tax time. The IRS continues to aggressively pursue the criminals that file fraudulent returns using someone else’s Social Security number. Though the agency is making progress on this front, taxpayers still need to be extremely cautious and do everything they can to avoid being victimized. (IR-2017-22)

Return Preparer Fraud: Be on the lookout for unscrupulous return preparers. The vast majority of tax professionals provide honest high-quality service. There are some dishonest preparers who set up shop each filing season to perpetrate refund fraud, identity theft and other scams that hurt taxpayers. (IR-2017-23)

Fake Charities: Be on guard against groups masquerading as charitable organizations to attract donations from unsuspecting contributors. Be wary of charities with names similar to familiar or nationally known organizations. Contributors should take a few extra minutes to ensure their hard-earned money goes to legitimate and currently eligible charities. IRS.gov has the tools taxpayers need to check out the status of charitable organizations. (IR-2017-25)

Inflated Refund Claims: Taxpayers should be on the lookout for anyone promising inflated refunds. Be wary of anyone who asks taxpayers to sign a blank return, promises a big refund before looking at their records or charges fees based on a percentage of the refund. Fraudsters use flyers, advertisements, phony storefronts and word of mouth via community groups where trust is high to find victims. (IR-2017-26)

Excessive Claims for Business Credits: Avoid improperly claiming the fuel tax credit, a tax benefit generally not available to most taxpayers. The credit is usually limited to off-highway business use, including use in farming. Taxpayers should also avoid misuse of the research credit. Improper claims often involve failures to participate in or substantiate qualified research activities and/or satisfy the requirements related to qualified research expenses. (IR-2017-27)

Falsely Padding Deductions on Returns: Taxpayers should avoid the temptation to falsely inflate deductions or expenses on their returns to pay less than what they owe or potentially receive larger refunds. Think twice before overstating deductions such as charitable contributions and business expenses or improperly claiming credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit. (IR-2017-28)

Falsifying Income to Claim Credits: Don’t invent income to erroneously qualify for tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers are sometimes talked into doing this by con artists. Taxpayers should file the most accurate return possible because they are legally responsible for what is on their return. This scam can lead to taxpayers facing large bills to pay back taxes, interest and penalties. In some cases, they may even face criminal prosecution. (IR-2017-29)

Abusive Tax Shelters: Don’t use abusive tax structures to avoid paying taxes. The IRS is committed to stopping complex tax avoidance schemes and the people who create and sell them. The vast majority of taxpayers pay their fair share, and everyone should be on the lookout for people peddling tax shelters that sound too good to be true. When in doubt, taxpayers should seek an independent opinion regarding complex products they are offered. (IR-2017-31)

Frivolous Tax Arguments: Don’t use frivolous tax arguments to avoid paying tax. Promoters of frivolous schemes encourage taxpayers to make unreasonable and outlandish claims even though they have been repeatedly thrown out of court. While taxpayers have the right to contest their tax liabilities in court, no one has the right to disobey the law or disregard their responsibility to pay taxes. The penalty for filing a frivolous tax return is $5,000. (IR-2017-33)

Offshore Tax Avoidance: The recent string of successful enforcement actions against offshore tax cheats and the financial organizations that help them shows that it’s a bad bet to hide money and income offshore. Taxpayers are best served by coming in voluntarily and getting caught up on their tax-filing responsibilities. The IRS offers the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program  to enable people to catch up on their filing and tax obligations. (IR-2017-35)

Pedophile Tracking Blountville, TN Man Sentenced

A Blountville, Tennessee, man was given a five-year prison sentence with all but 45 days suspended in Smyth County Circuit Court Friday for having sex with a girl under the age of 13.

Twenty-year-old Cody Alan Doran was originally arrested and charged in May of last year with 10 counts of rape and 10 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child in Smyth County.

Doran’s arrest stemmed from an investigation into his relationship with a then 13-year-old Saltville girl, according to court records.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

Those documents indicate that both Doran and the victim told police that they had been in a relationship for nearly a year and both admitted to having sexual intercourse at a number of locations in Smyth and Washington counties. Investigators determined that the girl was 12 when sexual relations began.

In addition to the Smyth County charges, and because some of the incidents took place across the Washington County line, Doran was charged with five counts of carnal knowledge of a child in Washington County Circuit Court.

Doran pleaded guilty in Smyth County Friday to one count of taking indecent liberties with children, in exchange for the other 19 charges being nolle processed, meaning the commonwealth declined to prosecute at this time.

Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Brendan Roche said the agreement had been reached given Doran’s lack of criminal history and the fact that the sex was consensual and the victim was reluctant to testify.

A similar agreement was made in Washington County Circuit Court earlier this month.

While Doran was granted time served for the Smyth County charge, Judge Randall C. Lowe also imposed a three-year supervised probation sentence and ordered him to take part in any counseling his probation office recommends. Doran is also ordered to register as a sex offender.

Private Detective: Shots Fired Into Lexington Store Fronts

Two local businesses are left cleaning up damage after someone fired shots into their storefronts overnight.

According to police, the store fronts of “Fan Outfitters” and “Hollywood Nails” in the Tates Creek Centre were both struck overnight by bullets.  A witness tells LEX 18 that she overheard multiple shots fired while stopping at the nearby Starbucks.

No one was injured in the shooting. Both businesses opened as usual Monday.

Kacie Mora has worked at nearby Tates Creek Animal Hospital for more than 10 years.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

She loves her job, but is concerned about some frightening things that have happened in recent months. That includes robberies just last year at the Rite Aid and Kroger. She says in the parking lot there have been reported overdoses and break-ins.

“That’s why I’m happy I have a big ole German shepherd that walks outside with me because it is nerve-wracking,” said Mora.

That’s why when she saw news of stray bullets and shattered glass at two nearby businesses, it didn’t shock her as much as it would have five years ago. That lack of surprise is why Mora is talking with us.

She says the presence of security helps during the day. The hope is that by addressing crime, these situations won’t happen again.

“This isn’t something to bury your head. It’s we need to see what we can do, and open it up, and try to make it better,” said Mora.
