The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says they’ve found the remains of a woman missing since 2011. Her husband is now charged in connection with her death.

Mary Carrithers

Mary Carrithers, a Madison County woman, went missing in April, 2011. The sheriff’s office announced today that they found her body last week just south of Lacey’s Spring on Highway 231 at Husky Mountain Road. New information in the case lead them to her body.

Carrithers’ last known residence was in the Owens Cross Roads area. After she was reported missing, deputies say the backyard of the home was dug up as they tried to find clues in her disappearance, but nothing was found there.

Authorities arrested Charles Carrithers late last week. He is charged with murder in connection with her death.

The sheriff’s office says they’re not sure of Carrithers’ cause of death at this time, but they are working with Alabama State Department of Forensics to find the cause.

The sheriff did say they interview Carrithers after his arrest, but he wasn’t saying anything.

Charles Carrithers is currently held in the Madison County jail on a $750,000 bond.

Private Detective: Church Minister Facing Sex Abuse Charges

Police have charged a church minister in Pulaski County with sex abuse involving a juvenile.

30-year-old Rex Allen Murphy is charged with first-degree sex abuse, third-degree sodomy and use of a minor in a sexual performance.

The Pulaski County jail’s website shows Murphy was booked into the facility early Tuesday. It did not list an attorney for him.

Murphy is a minister at Polly Ann Church of God in Eubank, where he teaches Sunday school.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

According to the arrest citation, a 16-year-old told police his Sunday school teacher had been touching him inappropriately both at the church and at Murphy’s home, for at least 6 months. The documents state “this type of inappropriate sexual behavior took place at least 10 times.”

Murphy allegedly threatened the teen with black magic resulting in death if he ever told anyone about what he had done. He allegedly told the victim he had the power to see all his sins by touching him.

“He was very scared, because the suspect, in the victim’s eyes, had been threatening his life in the form of Wicca, witchcraft, black magic,” said police chief Colin Hatfield.

Murphy told police “he thought he would be able to help the victim with his battle with homosexuality because he, too, had experimented with homosexuality.”

Police say “through the course of the interview, the defendant stated he knew he was wrong for doing this and also knew he was in trouble.”

“It took us about an hour and a half, and each time the questions would come back around, he would add one more thing at the end of his statement,” said Chief Hatfield.

A pastor at the church said church officials are handling the situation internally and that Murphy is no longer part of their church. He also said he didn’t know anything about the allegations and doesn’t believe anything related to the charges happened on church grounds.

Murphy denied a request for an interview.

Wrongful Death 2 Arrested and 2 More Wanted in Case of Body Found at Car Wash

Lexington police have made two arrests and are looking for two persons of interest in the case of a man found dead inside a closed car wash Monday night.

Joseph Sledge and Kavion Thomas have been arrested, Lexington police announced Tuesday, and charged with murder and robbery.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

Police continue looking for Theresa Jarrett and Thomas Lucky (pictured below), named persons of interest in the case. Police say they are known to be homeless and panhandle in the area and believe the duo may know something about the crime.

A unidentified white man of unknown age was found dead in a back workshop area of the closed Premier Car Wash on New Circle Road near Russell Cave Road around 7:30 p.m.

The victim’s wounds and the suspicious positioning of the body led investigators to believe foul play was involved.

It’s unclear exactly how the man died and he has not yet been identified. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday.

Premier Car Wash has been closed for several months. Police say they do not believe the victim or suspects had any affiliation with the business.

Pedophile Tracking Twins Indicted and Rearrested

The elderly twins accused of child pornography and sexual abuse while they were Boy Scout volunteers back in the 1970s were rearrested Tuesday morning after being indicted by a grand jury.

Police charged Jack and Jerry Cassidy on the original charges of child porn, and indecent and immoral practices with another after they say they found hundreds of photos of young boys tied up, naked and kissing each other in the 76-year-olds’ home.

The Cassidy brothers are now facing additional charges involving alleged victims who came forward after the brothers’ initial arrest at their home on Mason Hedley in August. Some of those men say the Cassidys victimized them in Boy Scouts when both brothers volunteered in the 1970s.

http://liarcatchers.com/pedophile_tracking.html

On Tuesday, a grand jury indicted Jack and Jerry Cassidy with possession of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor, sodomy, indecent and immoral practices with another (under age 15) and sexual abuse.

Police say they found journals documenting the abuse the twins are accused of. Investigators say there were records of practically every young boy in their Boy Scout troop, including birth dates and a timeline. Investigators say there was a “poem book” about each child and two books containing logs of sexual abuse. Investigators described the records as “trophies.”

Jack and Jerry Cassidy stand accused of abusing children, mainly boys ages 8 to 15, from 1963 to 1985.

Arraignment for the twins is scheduled for Oct. 24. They were out of jail on bond, but were rearrested shortly before noon on Tuesday.

Fraud Investigation Phone Scammer Pretend To Be IRS

If a telephone caller claims to represent the IRS and demands payment or face arrest, don’t believe him. If the caller says he’s from a utility and your power will be turned off if bills aren’t paid, hang up.

Across the region, people are being targeted by callers purporting to be from government agencies or utilities threatening harsh repercussions if money isn’t sent to them.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

And thousands of people — many senior citizens — fall for the scams.

The calls have reached such an epidemic level that the Internal Revenue Service and Federal Trade Commission have issued warnings. Federal law prohibits debt collectors from using intimidation, threats and harassment, and no one can be jailed over a debt. The Internal Review Service contacts people by mail, not by phone.

“The callers are aggressive, intimidating and threatening to turn off people’s power or have them arrested,” Piermont Police Chief Michael O’Shea said Monday. “Victims should break contact and contact the police. Government does not make those types of calls.”

One caller canvassing more than 100 Piermont businesses and residents identified himself once as “Police Chief Michael O’Shea,” O’Shea said. “These calls originate from overseas. They Google a community, in this case Piermont, and make calls,” O’Shea said.

In many cases, the scam involves buying prepaid Green Dot MoneyPak cards. People use the prepaid cards to pay telephone, cable and credit card bills. Victims are asked to give the card’s number to the scammer, who can then retrieve the amount paid on the card. The Green Dot website warns customers about scams and advises they never give their card number to people they don’t know.

Federal Trade Commission:

People can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov. Add “IRS Telephone Scam” to the comments in your complaint.

Crime prevention tips:

• Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.

• Remember that anyone who has the number on a Green Dot MoneyPak card has access to the funds on the card.

• Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who emails or calls you unsolicited.

• Never wire money, provide debit or credit card numbers or Green Dot MoneyPak card numbers to someone you do not know.

• Utility companies and government agencies will not contact you demanding immediate payment by MoneyPak.

Insurance Fraud NH Resident Sentenced to Prison

The New Hampshire Insurance Department announced that a Nashua, N.H., resident pleaded guilty in Hillsborough County Superior Court on Oct. 9 to two charges of felony insurance fraud and one felony charge of bail jumping, stemming from a fraudulent insurance claim he had filed with Travelers Insurance Co.

The department announced that in September 2012, after the roof of his home was damaged by high winds, Mark Kelley sought reimbursement from Travelers Insurance Co. by submitting two receipts that he claimed showed he had paid a local contractor for repairs.

http://liarcatchers.com/insurance_fraud.html

Subsequent investigation by Travelers, and later by a senior investigator at the New Hampshire Insurance Department, revealed that Kelley had not made any such payments to the contractor and that many of the alleged repairs had not been completed.

After being indicted in October 2013 for insurance fraud, Kelley failed to appear at a scheduled hearing in February 2014, and he was arrested in May 2014. He was sentenced to two concurrent 12-month prison sentences on the insurance fraud charges, with six months of each sentence suspended on good behavior for two years. Kelley also was sentenced to one and a half to three years for failing to appear in court, with the entire sentence
suspended on good behavior for two years.

“Insurance fraud is a crime that affects not just the insurance companies but New Hampshire residents, who end up paying higher premiums,” said NH Insurance Commissioner Roger Sevigny. “I am very proud of our Fraud Investigation Unit, which works tirelessly to protect consumers by prosecuting those who break the law.”
