Missing Person Remains Found in NY River Could Be Autistic Teen

Police were investigating whether human remains found along the East River could be those of an autistic teen who walked out of his school more than three months ago and vanished, law enforcement officials said Friday.

A 14-year-old girl shooting photos at a park discovered a left arm on Thursday, said an official with direct knowledge of the case. A second official said the girl posted a photo of an arm on Twitter and later told her mother about the discovery, who called police. Neither official was authorized divulge investigative details and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The arm was discovered on the shore. Police also found the lower part of a torso and legs on the rocks at low tide, along with black Air Jordan sneakers, white socks and tattered denim jeans that resembled what 14-year-old Avonte Oquendo was wearing when he disappeared, the officials said. The rest of the remains have not been recovered.

At daybreak Friday, police in waders searched the water while a dog sniffed the marshy terrain along the shore. Police were to launch a dive after the shoreline was thoroughly searched.

Avonte has been missing since Oct. 4, when he walked out of his school toward a park overlooking the East River. His disappearance sparked a search that included hundreds of officers, marine units and volunteers.

Missing person posters were plastered on lampposts and placed on car windshields throughout the city. The teen, who did not speak, was fascinated with the subway system and Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials made announcements on trains for weeks asking for help finding him. Police checked every subway station and tunnel.

Authorities also hunted down hundreds of tips in New York City and its suburbs. Despite a few false alarms, including an image of a person snapped on a train that resembled the boy, he has not been located.

Detectives were not sure whether the remains found Thursday belonged to the missing teen. The body parts were found at least 11 miles from where he was last seen, considerably upriver and east of the park near Avonte’s school.

One investigative theory was that Avonte might have fallen into the river near the school. Although the remains were found upriver, past densely-populated shoreline and the Rikers Island jail, the East River is a tidal strait with strong currents that reverse flow many times a day.

The family’s lawyer, David Perecman, said he spoke to Avonte’s mother, Vanessa Fontaine, around 2 a.m. He said she was considering the discovery to be just another tip until she hears something more definitive.

Perecman said the family will wait for DNA test results, and police have the teen’s father’s DNA on file. He confirmed that the jeans and size 5 1/2 sneakers found on the remains resembled what Avonte was wearing. But the remains were badly decomposed.

He said of Fontaine: “This has taken a significant toll on her as a human being.”

The remains were taken to a morgue, where the medical examiner’s office will try to identify them and determine a cause of death, which may take several days, police said.

A reward fund for information leading to Avonte’s safe return was at least $60,000, including $50,000 from an anonymous donation to the advocacy group Autism Speaks.

Avonte’s family has filed a notice of claim saying they planned to sue the city, arguing that school officials allowed him to walk out of the building and waited too long to notify police that he was missing.

Former police commissioner Raymond Kelly had defended the school safety officer who last saw the boy, saying she told him to go back to his classroom and he left the hallway. The city’s law department has said the case is “distressing.”

Wrongful Death Pair Sentenced in 2011 Clark County Murder

Percy Hargrove and Sheena Tipton were sentenced Thursday for their roles in the 2011 shooting death of Andrew Ingram.

Hargrove plead guilty to murder and burglary charges for a total of 27 years with credit for time served. The murder charge carries 20 years and seven years for robbery.

Tipton is facing 10 years on facilitation of murder and robbery charges with credit for time served.

The family of Ingram was visibly outraged by the sentences handed down outside of the courtroom.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“I wanted him to get the death penalty. That what I wanted for him and that’s what I wanted for her,” Angela Rudolph, Ingram’s sister said.

Hargrove shot the 33-year-old Ingram, father of six, after chasing him down during a home invasion.

Tipton drew Hargrove a map of Ingram’s place.

“The way that they did that, they hunted him down like a dog and shot him and killed him,” Rudolph said. “I don’t think that he got the justice that he deserved in this case.”

Rudolph and the rest of the family said they will continue to fight for that justice including filing a wrongful death lawsuit.

LEX 18 reached out to Hargrove and Tipton after their sentencing and they did not wish to comment.

Private Detective 71 Tires Slashed at Georgetown Auto Business

A total of 71 tires on least 22 different vehicles were slashed at a Scott County Auto Shop this week.

One of Tom Jacko’s employees at J&B Auto Mart and Repair on Connector Road in Georgetown, made the disturbing discovery Wednesday morning.

The owner says only the new vehicles’ tires we slashed, though, not the ones that were there for repair, which finds to be quite curious.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Just about all the vehicles he had on his lot for sale, now have slashed tires.

As they go about changing out the damaged tires for new ones, the owner says he can’t help but feel he’s been personally targeted.

“I don’t understand that. Someone’s gonna slice tires, you think they’re just gonna go through and slice them, not pick out the ones that are for sale. Doesn’t make sense,” he said.

The owner adds that he’s never felt the need for a surveillance camera in more than 20 years of business, until now.

Jacko is offering a $1,000 reward of his own money hoping someone will come forward with information that will lead to an arrest.

LEX 18 has learned other Georgetown-area car dealers had similar episodes of vandalism just this week.

Missing Person Ashley Britton of Georgetown

Georgetown police are searching for a teenage girl who went missing earlier this week.

17-year-old Ashley Britton of Georgetown has been missing since Monday. Police say she was last seen at Kroger and Walmart in Georgetown.

Her parents say they found a note in her room stating she was leaving home. She left on her own, according to police, and is believed to be with an adult man she met online.

“She didn’t say where she was going, but she outlined her plans of what she intended to do,” said Captain Robert Swanigan with Georgetown Police.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Her mother says she believes her daughter was manipulated into leaving.

Evan Foreman, who has been good friends with Britton since junior high, says he spoke with her a couple days before she went missing and is surprised about the whole situation.

“We were just talking about how we’d never part ways and stay friends until we grow old just like we want to,” he said. “I never saw this coming.”

Ashley is believed to be driving her 2002 Infinity G20 which is Wildcat blue.

“If she were to see this, I would tell her I love her and miss her and to come on home,” Foreman said.

If you see or have any information about Ashley Britton, you are asked to call Georgetown Police.

Private Detective Fatal Crash and Standoff in Lexington

The man accused of causing a fatal accident and then engaging in a standoff with police for several hours also faces charges for a previous run-in with police in Lexington.

Police say Scott County deputies tried to arrest Keenan McLaughlin, 22, on drug charges when he took off Tuesday night. As he fled, he crossed into Fayette County and collided head-on with a car on Georgetown Road. Luis Gonzales, 62, died in the crash and another man suffered injuries.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

McLaughlin ran from the scene, and police later tracked him down at a house along Second Street. After a standoff that lasted several hours, police entered the home and took McLaughlin into custody.

Court documents indicate McLaughlin had a run-in with Lexington police over the summer. Police say he tried to sell a stolen Mercedes to a car lot, then bailed out of another car when an officer tried to stop him and ran away. That car rolled into a Transylvania University police cruiser. Officers say they found drug paraphernalia and a gun in the back seat.

Records indicate McLaughlin also has an extensive criminal history in Florida.

Currently, McLaughlin faces a charge of trafficking heroin, along with nine additional charges from that run-in last summer. Police have not released information on possible charges stemming from the crash and standoff.

McLaughlin is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
