Wrongful Death Teen’s Body Found in Montana

The body of a teenager missing since last month may have been found in Poplar, buried in the yard of a murder suspect’s grandmother.

John Swain, 18, was reported missing from Bismarck last month.

The case became a homicide investigation last week after a Bismarck woman found clothes Swain was believed to have been wearing in a burn barrel along with a knife and pieces of a cellphone.

Documents charging Theo Crowe, 25, with Class AA felony murder were filed on Tuesday, but he has not made a court appearance in the case.

He is being held in the Williams County Jail on unrelated charges.

Residents of Poplar, Mont., said on Wednesday investigators were digging in Crowe’s grandmother’s yard.

Bismarck Police Deputy Chief Randy Ziegler said the Roosevelt County, Mont., Sheriff’s Department worked with investigators from Bismarck to serve search warrants at the home and found a body.

He would not confirm that the body was that of Swain, but an autopsy is being planned for positive identification.

Swain had moved to Bismarck recently from Sioux Falls, S.D., and his roommate reported him missing on May 14. The roommate had received a text message from Swain on May 11. Swain had a medical condition and didn’t have his medication with him, so police put out a statewide welfare check for him.

A woman at 420½ N. 22nd St., in Bismarck reported finding some burned items in a trash can in a shed at her home on June 20. Among the items were clothing that investigators determined matched clothing Swain was wearing when he was last seen, a knife and pieces of a cellphone.

The woman had been out of state from May 5 to May 31 and had let Crowe stay at her home. She told police after finding the items in the trash can that she also found blood on the floor in the home when she returned.

Police have taken evidence, including cuttings of carpet and subfloor, from the home, according to a search warrant inventory. They also have searched a 2012 Buick Regal with Wyoming license plates as part of the case.

The Sioux Falls Argus Leader has reported that detectives told Swain’s father that Swain may have gone to a party a few houses down from where he was staying in Bismarck on May 11 and may have met Crowe at the party.

Police believe Crowe and Swain had just met on the day police believe Swain was killed. A complaint in the case accuses Crowe of murdering Swain between May 10 and May 17.

Police have said Crowe recently made a trip to his hometown of Poplar, about an hour west of Williston. Court documents list Crowe’s current address as Trenton, N.D., which is southwest of Williston.

According to the U.S. Army, Crowe received a bad conduct discharge in February as part of a sentence imposed by a court martial. The allegations in the case involved theft, drugs and striking another soldier while Crowe was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, in July 2011. He was confined at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Fort Sill for more than 1½ years of his three years, nine months and 22 days in the Army.

Crowe also faces unrelated charges of terrorizing, disorderly conduct and simple assault in Williams County. In that case, he is accused of assaulting a woman who was taking him home when he was drunk on June 13, then of threatening a deputy and a security officer and making profane statements at a hospital. He is in the custody of the Williams County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash or surety bond. His next court hearing in that case is scheduled for July 23. His attorney in that case told The Associated Press that Crowe likely will plead not guilty.

Insurance Fraud 9 Arrested and 3 Wanted

Nine people are charged with insurance fraud, felony theft, and child desertion after they allegedly staged three car crashes in Lafayette Parish in order to collect more than $112,000 in insurance settlements.

Farice Daigle, who police say is the mastermind of the operation, was arrested last week on three counts each of insurance fraud and theft, two counts of money laundering, and one count of child desertion.

Troopers say Daigle arranged three crashes between 2011 and 2012 and received a cut of the insurance payouts from those who were involved in the crash. They say each crash involved three vehicles with eight or more people, including young children between the ages of one and thirteen, in the cars.

Two other alleged accomplices–Angel Broussard and Chelsie Chevalier–face one count each of insurance fraud and theft.

The final alleged conspirator, Jamie Ceasar, faces one count of insurance fraud.

Three other suspects are still at large. Courtney Thierry and Seth Daigle, both 27 and from Opelousas, and 24-year-old Niya Sanders of LaPlace, are wanted on insurance fraud and theft charges. If you know there whereabouts, call Louisiana State Police at 262-5880.

Private Investigator Berea Mother Charged with DUI

A Berea mother is in trouble after police say she drove drunk with her baby and boyfriend in the car, then crashed it. But that’s not the only trouble she faces.

It wasn’t a bad accident, officers say, just a dent on a guardrail. But police say it was an accident that shouldn’t have happened, because the driver, Brandy Cotton, 34, shouldn’t have been behind the wheel.

Cotton is now charged with DUI. Police say she just picked her boyfriend up from work Thursday night, and he quickly noticed her condition and tried to get her to pull over. He told police he was afraid for his safety as well as their one-year-old baby in the back seat. “He was doing the right thing to get her to pull over,” said Berea Police Sgt. Jake Reed.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Berea police originally got the call about the accident and shortly after that they got another 911 call they say describing that Cotton had allegedly assaulted a Good Samaritan who just pulled over to help.

When investigators arrive, they claim Cotton was carrying a concealed deadly weapon when the investigating officer found a tire iron under the front seat.

For now, Cotton is behind bars. Her baby was unharmed and is now in the custody of her boyfriend

Wrongful Death Man Charged in Homeless Man Beating Death

A man charged with brutally killing a fellow homeless man earlier this month in Lexington made a court appearance in the case Friday.

The family of victim Tommy Crawford listened as disturbing new details about what allegedly happened in the incident were revealed in a Fayette County courtroom.

Early in the morning on a day in early June, Crawford was allegedly killed at the hands of Jimmy Alexander. “I just don’t understand it,” said Crawford’s mother, Dessie Lykins. “Why would somebody want to hurt somebody like that? He had a broken arm and his ribs were broke. I’m sure he didn’t fight back.”

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

In testimony Friday, detectives told the courtroom about how the beating of Crawford was brutally carried out with a 2×4. Detectives say the two got into it at a homeless camp off of Newtown Pike while both were allegedly drunk.

What could’ve been a serious squabble changed when police say Alexander killed Crawford to make sure he wasn’t charged with assault. “That doesn’t make any sense because he was going to get charged anyway,” said Lykins. “So, he didn’t have to kill my child.”

Police say Alexander has confessed to the crime in the past. In court Friday, he also plead guilty to alcohol intoxication.

Identity Theft PA Ex Soldier Pleads Guilty

A man AWOL from his Army post in Louisiana used a computer at a job center in Pittsburgh to obtain a debit card in the name of billionaire Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, and attempted to access more than $1.6 million, a federal prosecutor said Thursday.

Brandon Lee Price, 30, of Pittsburgh, pleaded guilty to four counts of bank fraud and must return for sentencing Sept. 30.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Most of the transactions Price attempted did not go through, as they were flagged as suspicious by Citibank, which issued the card. But Price was able to pay $658.81 toward a delinquent Armed Forces Bank loan last year, Assistant U.S. Attorney James Wilson said.

“This case with this high-profile victims calls attention to the seriousness of the crime of identity theft,” U.S. Attorney David Hickton said.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Citibank spokesman Andrew Brent said that the “security of our customers’ accounts is our top priority” and that measures are in place to protect them.

Price had left his unit without permission at Fort Polk, La., in July 2010 and wasn’t found until the FBI arrested him in Pittsburgh in March 2012. Fort Polk officials did not immediately return a call, but Wilson said after Thursday’s hearing that Price has since been court-martialed and discharged.

In order for Price to plead guilty, Wilson had to detail the evidence for the judge, explaining the scam began when Price called Citibank in late December 2011 and pretended to be Allen.

Price told a customer service representative “he was attempting to do online banking and needed his debit card number” but didn’t have it handy, Wilson said.

Price was able to give the rep the last four digits of Allen’s Social Security number, the last two digits of a debit card account and the entire number for one of Allen’s checking accounts. Despite that, Citibank didn’t give Price the account number he sought, though he did get the number two days later when he called Citibank back and provided additional personal information about Allen.

Price then changed the address on Allen’s account to Price’s home address in Pittsburgh and claiming the card was lost, Citibank sent a replacement to Price’s home.

Price first used the card to make the delinquent loan payment, then attempted several transactions that didn’t go through, including a $1 purchase at a dollar store near his home.

Price also tried to use the card to make three transfers — of $94,000, $800,000 and $130,000 — to accounts he controlled. He also unsuccessfully tried to open an investment account with a $388,000 funds transfer and to purchase $250,000 in certificates of deposit, Wilson said.

FBI agents later determined Price logged onto publicly available computers at a local job center, where he searched for topics including “identity theft,” ”brokerage accounts” and “Paul G. Allen.” Wilson said he doesn’t know why the billionaire was targeted.

Both Price and his federal public defender declined to comment.

Bank fraud carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, but Price’s case will be governed by guidelines dictated by the amount stolen. The government argues the “loss” is the $1.6 million Price tried to steal, but his attorney contends it’s merely the $658.81 he actually siphoned from Allen’s account.

Missing Person Teen Missing in Madison County

She has been missing for almost a week, but a missing Madison County teen is still on a lot of minds.

Crews were on the scene Friday in Berea looking for clues into the whereabouts of Brooke Farthing, 18, conducting a ground search of an estimated 800 acres along Floyd Branch Road in Berea. Officials also attempted a search from the air, but were unable to see anything because of the terrain where the search is being conducted.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

It’s the area where Farthing was last seen about a week ago. Police say they have not received a tip or anything of that nature, but that they are just trying to make sure they cover all their bases and exhaust all of their resources.

At least 75 volunteers from several agencies are involved in the search, which includes the use of K-9s.

Arson Investigation Club at Carolina Stadium Fire

Columbia Fire Department officials say an apartment fire that displaced 21 people and caused $400,000 in damage was an act of arson.

The fire started in a vacant ground floor apartment about midnight June 12, burning up to the roof of building eight of the Club at Carolina Stadium, which houses many University of South Carolina students. Twenty-four apartments were damaged.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins would not discuss details of the ongoing investigation but said the department came to the conclusion that the fire was arson through “a combination of process of elimination and evidence.”

http://liarcatchers.com/arson_investigation.html

The fire department also is looking for an unknown Club at Carolina Stadium resident who alerted many of his neighbors to the late-night fire. He is not a suspect or person of interest, but Jenkins said officials believe he may have additional information that will help the investigation.

“But, mainly, we want to thank him for his quick actions and alerting everyone to the fire,” Jenkins said.

Officials are trying to determine whether there is a connection between the fire and at least a dozen tenants who were forced to move out of the complex, Jenkins said.

The Club at Carolina Stadium recently completed more than $1 million in renovations of 240 apartments in the 10-building complex. Each building has three floors of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

Anyone with information should call the South Carolina Arson Hotline at (800) 922-7766. There is a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
