A Battle Creek man faces a federal charge after allegedly taking sexually explicit photos of an underage girl and sharing them online.
According to federal court documents filed Friday, Matthew Andaluz is accused of sexual exploitation of children.
In an eight-page criminal complaint outlining the case, a Department of Homeland Security agent said he started investigating after getting a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
NCMEC told the agent that 12 explicit images of a prepubescent girl had been discovered in June 2013 as federal authorities investigated a registered sex offender in Washington state. A NCMEC analyst was able to identify the serial number of camera used to take the photos and found they were taken between Dec. 7, 2010 and Jan. 17, 2011.

The NCMEC analyst then searched the internet for any other photos taken with the same camera. He was able to find a nonpornographic image on the website DeviantArt.com. The account to which the photo was posted was linked to Facebook, Twitter and Google accounts, all of which identified the user as Andaluz.
The Department of Homeland Security subpoenaed Facebook for the user’s information and was provided with two IP addresses. Those IP addresses were linked to the street address at Battle Creek where Andaluz currently lives, the complaint said. When they searched that house on Thursday, authorities say they confiscated the camera in question, a thumb drive containing more child pornography, backups of the explicit images that prompted the investigation, and bedding and sex toys seen in the explicit images.
Federal investigators say they were also able to identify the house in which the photos were taken as a rental property in Springfield where Andaluz used to live, the criminal complaint says. Additionally, they confirmed through a West Michigan Best Buy that Andaluz had bought the camera used to take the explicit photos in 2010.
Authorities identified the victim in the photos was the daughter of one of Andaluz’s friends. According to the criminal complaint, she said Andaluz had molested her when she was between the ages of 10 and 13. She also said that on one occasion, she had seen him send photos of her to someone online.
According to the criminal complaint, when the Homeland Security agent questioned Andaluz about the photos, Andaluz “show no emotion” and “made no denial” of taking them. He did, however, deny engaging in intercourse with the victim.
