Cold Case “Mountain Jane Doe” Identified 47 Years After Death

A body discovered in 1969 by a young boy picking wildflowers has been identified 47 years after she was found.

The Harlan County 1969 Jane Doe has been identified as Sonja Kaye Blair- Adams by DNA. She was found stabbed to death and buried in a Harlan cemetery. She was known by locals as ‘The Mountain Jane Doe.”

Her Harlan County grave had a marker identifying her as such.

Karen Stipes, the daughter of Sonja Blair-Adams searched the National Database of Missing and Unidentified Persons System and contacted Detective Josh Howard and Harlan County Coroner Philip Bianchi when she realized there was a possibility the 1969 Jane Doe may be her mother.

Sonja was originally from Letcher County, Kentucky and was 21 at the time she went missing.

Investigators exhumed Jane Doe’s body and compared a sample of her DNA with a DNA sample from Sonja’s family.  LEX 18 spoke to officials with NMUS when they took on the case.

“It’s one of those cases that I’ll never forget and I’d love to send this person home,” Todd Matthews told LEX 18’s Jessica Reyes.

Wednesday, Matthews got his wish.

The remains were sent to University of North Texas in 2015 and in September 2016 it was confirmed the DNA matched and the 1969 Jane Doe was Sonja Blair-Adams.

Wrongful Death Investigators Still Looking for Driver in Fatal Hit and Run

Investigators are still looking for the driver of a small, blue hatchback that they say hit and killed a 10-year-old Pulaski County boy.

Stanley Turner was killed in a hit-and-run on June 20th on Rock Lick Creek Road.

On that road sits a cross adorned with flowers to honor his memory.

Deputies say that whoever hit the boy kept driving.

Friends and family members of Turner told LEX 18’s Breanna Gilroy that they cannot take it anymore, and they want to know who hit the child.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

They have started a fund to help attract more tips in the case. The fund has more than $2,000, all from donations, for the person who can lead them to the driver responsible for Turner’s death.

“I’m not mad,” said Turner’s grandmother, Karen Godsey, “I’m really upset.  I’m not mad because I know it probably really was an accident.”

Deputies say that they are looking for a woman who was driving a small, blue hatchback with Ohio plates.

If you have any information on this case, please call the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.

If you would like to donate to the “Justice for Stanley” fund, you can do so at the First Southern National Bank in Somerset.

Identity Theft Skimmer Found in Richmond Area Gas Pump

Kentucky Department of Agriculture inspectors discovered a credit card “skimmer” during a routine inspection of a motor fuel pump at a Richmond BP earlier this month.

“This device was discovered by our inspectors as part of their everyday job duties,” Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. “We took on this responsibility at no additional cost to Kentucky taxpayers. This discovery saved consumers thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges that could have been made with data stolen by the use of this device.”

Skimmers are electronic devices used to capture data from consumers’ credit cards. This device was found at a BP station on the Robert R. Martin bypass. The device was removed and turned over to Richmond police.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Losses due to credit card skimming are expected to exceed $3 billion globally this year, according to consumer transaction technology company NCR of Duluth, Ga.

The KDA is charged with the task of inspecting motor fuel pumps in every retail establishment in the Commonwealth once a year to ensure that the amount of fuel dispensed matches the amount shown on the pump, and check to make sure pumps are in proper working order.

As part of the inspection, they look for signs that a pump has been compromised by thieves who install skimmers to steal consumer data. The data is used to produce fake credit cards and make fraudulent charges on the victim’s account. Inspectors shut down any pump that may have been tampered with and report the incident to law enforcement authorities.
