Private Detective: Thieves Caught on Camera in Lexington

The owner of a Lexington business said that three people stole from his store Tuesday.

Anupam Gupta owns Lexington Phone Repair. He said that around 1:00 p.m., three people came into his store looking to have some phones repaired. Gupta fixed them, but when it came time to pay, he said that one of the girls claimed somebody else was going to come pay since there wasn’t enough money on her card.

One by one the three left. The last woman sprinted away from the store. Gupta chased her while on phone with police dispatch.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

He said he caught her in a nearby parking garage and wrestled her to the ground. He has small scabs on his knuckle where he says she bit down on his hand.

Gupta said his goal is to catch the people who stole his sense of security.

“I just thought it would never happen to me. I never thought I was the target, but I guess I was,” said Gupta.

They found an unpaid receipt from one woman who signed before she took off.

If you can identify any of the people involved, you are asked to call the police.

Fraud Investigation Work From Home Scheme Gives Fake Lexington Address

A phony work from home “logistics inspector” job opportunity being advertised online is using a Lexington, KY address and a BBB investigation shows the business has no physical location there.

The Better Business Bureau received an inquiry from a job-seeker in Miami, Florida.  She responded to a listing on CraigsList that appeared to be a legitimate job offer for a “logistics manager.”  The woman was told that the company, “The Packard Group,” was located in Lexington, KY.

The job paid $2700 a month base salary plus medical benefits to receive packages at home, inspect the contents, take photos of them, and re-ship them to other addresses.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

The consumer’s inquiry raised red flags because the job offer resembled the “package re-shipper” work-from-home scam that has been the subject of previous warnings by BBB and federal authorities. A check of “The Packard Group” website showed a lot of generic photos of airplanes, trucks and names of well-known shipping companies.  Some of the language used on the website and in emails to the job-seeker was oddly worded or contained grammatical errors, classic signs of a possible scam.

The biggest giveaway of the scam is the fact that the Lexington, Kentucky address on the company’s website is fake.  A BBB representative visited the address, which is an office suite rental building, and confirmed there is no “Packard Group” at that location. Phone calls to the toll-free number provided on the website only reached voicemail.

While a job making a good salary from home sounds great, it could end up earning the job seeker nothing but legal trouble.  U.S. Postal Inspectors and other authorities say that in these reshipping jobs, the unsuspecting worker is really moving stolen merchandise, or items purchased with stolen credit cards. The “employee” becomes an accomplice in criminal activity.

BBB advises job-seekers to use caution with job descriptions that advertise “package processing,” “package forwarding,” “wiring funds,” etc.  Be wary if you are asked to accept packages at your home address and forward them on, especially to a foreign country (example: “overseas home office”). Research carefully… simply looking at a company’s website may not be enough.  Check out job offers with the BBB at (859) 259-1008, 1-800-866-6668 or www.bbb.org.

Identity Theft FL Deputy Formally Indicted in Identity Theft Case

A South Florida sheriff’s deputy arrested last month in an identity theft case has been formally indicted by a federal grand jury.

Court documents show suspended Palm Beach County deputy Frantz Felisma is facing charges of aggravated identity theft, access device fraud and conspiracy to commit identity theft. He is being held without bail.

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Authorities say the seven-year veteran used a law enforcement database to steal personal identification information of people and sold it to another man who has since pleaded guilty. The scheme allegedly focused on people who had expensive cars and used the stolen information to obtain credit cards.

Felisma is on administrative leave without pay from the sheriff’s office. His attorney didn’t respond Saturday to an email seeking comment.
