Private Detective: Second Case of Suspicious Behavior Towards Girl at Southern Middle School

According to a letter sent out to parents of Southern Middle School students, a man in a white van took pictures of female students as they were waiting at the bus stop Friday morning. Students said that the man had a beard and a cane. Police say that the man was gesturing at the girls to come to his vehicle.

The letter said that the students took down the license plate number and all of the information has been given to the Lexington Police Department.

Lexington Police say that they do know who drives that vehicle and they are now tracking the man down to see what his intentions were.

This is the second case of suspicious behavior experienced by Southern Middle School students this week.

In both instances, the students were traveling between school and home.

On Wednesday,a letter was sent home about a man in a white truck who slowed down and spoke to a Southern Middle student as she was walking in King Arthur Court. The student promptly ran away from the man. This started an investigation into what could be an attempted luring.

Officers had already increased patrols in the vicinity and will continue to do so.

The letter sent home wanted to remind parents to talk to their children about being cautious around strangers. Students are encouraged to walk in groups when walking to school or the bus stop.

Wrongful Death Man Charged in Relation to Son’s Death

An article from the Times Tribune said that the father of a 13-year-old boy who died in a crash is now being charged with manslaughter in relation to the boy’s death.

It was around 2 a.m. on February 23, when Jathan Malachi Patterson, crashed a 2008 Nissan Altima.

Jonathan Patterson,34, of Hinkle, is now accused of giving his son illegal controlled substances before the crash.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

The Times Tribune said that Kentucky State Police Officer Trooper Shane Jacobs said that troopers were called to the scene of the crash which happened on KY-3438, just two miles south of Barbourville. He said that an officer saw Patterson driving before the crash without any headlights on.

The article Jathan had already traveled off the left-hand shoulder of the road and overturned before the officer could do a traffic stop. Jathan and his 14-year-old passenger were ejected from the vehicle. Jathan was pronounced dead at the scene, his passenger was treated at the Knox County Hospital and later released.

Trooper Jacobs said that the boys were not wearing seatbelts.

The article said that both Jonathan Patterson and Brandon Bledsoe, 33 of Barbourville, have been named on an indictment for charges in relation to the crash that killed Jathan.

The indictment charges Bledsoe with first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor after allegedly “inducting, assisting, or causing” Jathan to “engage in activity involving the illegal controlled substances.” This offense is listed as occurring on January 22 though, before the crash.

The next three counts on the indictment, according to the article, charge Johnathan Patterson in relation to the crash. He was charged with second-degree manslaughter in the second count of the indictment. It alleges that Johnathan “wantonly encouraged” Jathan “to operate a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants” which led to Jathan driving “in such a manner that cause hid death.”

Count three charges Jonathan Patterson with first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor after he allegedly “knowingly and unlawfully” inducted or caused Jathan to engage in the activity involving illegal controlled substances and in doing so, led to Jathan’s wreck.

He is also charged with theft by unlawful taking of the value of $500 or more but less than $10,000.

Jonathan Patterson is accused of “aiding, counseling or attempting to aid” Jathan in taking the Nissan, which was owned by Jathan’s mother, Virgie Mills.

Bledsoe is in the Clay County Detention Center. His bond is not specified.

Jonathan Patterson is in the Knox County Detention Center under a $50,000 cash bond.

Wrongful Death 19 Year Old Pleads Not Guilty in Teen’s Death

A 19-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges in the death of a 19-year-old mother.

Earlier this month, deputies say James Ratliff was riding an ATV with 19-year-old Mattie Conley in Greenup County.

Investigators say Ratliff’s 17-year-old girlfriend got mad and started chasing after the pair with her car. Conley apparently jumped off the ATV in fear. Her body was later found next to the side of Kentucky 7-84.

Earlier this week, Ratliff entered a not guilty plea to the charges of manslaughter.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney says new evidence shows the way  Ratliff’s defense team says the death happened is impossible.

Ratliff’s girlfriend has also been charged in the case as a juvenile, but could be charged as an adult.

Wrongful Death Bond Revoked For Woman Accused of Killing Child

Leslie A. Finch, 25, of Kill Buck, who stands accused of killing her 1-year-old daughter in April, is back in Cattaraugus County Jail after a bondsman last week revoked the $100,000 insurance bond on which she was released.

According to Jane St. John, the court’s deputy clerk, a bondsman discovered that Harry Scull, 41, who has been charged with felony insurance fraud after allegedly burning down his Buffalo Road home in Allegany earlier in April, put up that property and some money to fund Finch’s release.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“He did” pay her bond on June 5, St. John confirmed to the Times Herald on Thursday afternoon, “and then the bondsman revoked the bond because apparently the property he put up to secure it was one that was burned down.”

Finch was again remanded to the county jail on Sept. 17, St. John said. No formal announcement to the media had been made at the time.

District Attorney Lori Rieman said Finch’s attorney, Jason Schmidt of Fredonia, was present.

“Instead of just putting out a warrant (for her arrest), we gave the attorney the courtesy of letting him know,” St. John said. “The bondsman can revoke it any time he wants.”

Normally, defendants must post at least 10 percent of bond or bail, the deputy clerk said, noting she was unsure exactly how much had been posted for Finch’s release in June.

“On (a bond) that large, they usually have to put up some property to back it up,” St. John added.

The relationship between Finch and Scull was unclear as of Thursday afternoon. Arrest records indicate both of their addresses as 3629 N. Authority Road, Kill Buck.

Rieman did not offer comment on their relationship or whether or not authorities believe Finch knew about Scull’s alleged actions to cause the fire.

“Whether or not she knew about it, we don’t know. She was in jail,” Rieman said.

A source close to the investigation said Scull and Finch’s mother were involved romantically.

Finch’s next court date, a return on motions, is slated for Nov. 2. Jury selection in her murder trial will begin Feb. 22.

Finch has pleaded not guilty to two counts of second-degree murder, a class A-1 felony; first-degree manslaughter, a class B felony; second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony; reckless assault of a child, a class D felony; first-degree assault, a class B felony; two counts of second-degree assault, a class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.

Around noon on April 24, emergency responders were called to 191 Broad St., Salamanca, to help a 1-year-old girl, Mila Whipple, who was not breathing. Mila succumbed to her extensive injuries two days later at Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo.

Finch, the child’s biological mother, was charged in her death on May 19.

No additional charges have been filed, Rieman said.

Scull was charged Sept. 9 with second-degree insurance fraud, a class C felony, following a months-long investigation into a fire and explosion April 6 at his former home at 3122 Buffalo Road, Allegany.

Firefighters with Allegany Engine Co. responded at approximately 9:30 p.m. that day and were joined by several other volunteer agencies to douse the blaze consuming the small, single-story residence.

Nearby residents that evening reported a loud explosion near the intersection of Buffalo Road and North 7th Street. No injuries were reported, and no one was home at the time.

Authorities allege Scull caused the blaze and fled that night to Syracuse. He was released under supervision.

No information on his next court date was available Thursday.

The Cedar Grove Police Department has charged two women with multiple instances of insurance fraud involving theft, fraud and forgery.

Police arrested the two suspects following an ongoing investigation into a Cedar Grove dentist’s claims that Carla A. Sousa, 27, of Hillside – a former employee at his office – submitted fraudulent claims to insurance companies in his name.

According to the dentist, Sousa then cashed checks issued by insurance companies and kept the money.

According to police, between August of 2013 and February of 2015, Sousa submitted numerous fraudulent claims in patient names for work that was not performed and upon receiving checks, forged the doctor’s name and cashed the checks.

Police stated that 77 checks worth $32,661 were cashed.

According to police, during their investigation, officers determined that Sousa had submitted ten fraudulent claims for work that was not performed in the name of her friend, Raquel Silva, 29, of Elizabeth.

Police subsequently determined the checks on those claims were cashed by Silva, according to a release.

Police arrested Sousa on Sept. 18 and charged her with Theft, Forgery, Identity Theft and Health Care Claim Fraud.

Police arrested Silva on Sept. 21, and charged her with theft with an aggregate total of $2,263 for the 10 checks she received and cashed.
