Wrongful Death One Dead in Clay County Shooting

A death investigation is underway in Clay County after a man was found shot to death at his home.

The Clay County Coroner says 24-year-old Trevor Dykes was killed in the shooting this morning at his house. Investigators are still on scene.

There is no word if there has been an arrest in the case. Family members say he was shot on his way to work and believe he was targeted.  The sheriff tells LEX 18 that this doesn’t appear to be random and could stem from custody issues.

Dykes has two children and has another child on the way. His fiance was in the shower at the time of the shooting and heard the gunshots.

Wrongful Death Clark County Murder Suspect Arrested in Ohio

A Clark County murder suspect is in custody in Ohio. Meanwhile Kentucky investigators are trying to piece together what happened on Twin Fork Lane in the Trapp Community.

The sheriff’s department said the body of a man was discovered in a shed on a farm in Clark County, wrapped in a pool liner. Detectives suspect that the man, whose identity is being withheld pending positive identification, was killed more than two months ago.

Now another man, Roger Kinney Jr., who lived at the same residence is under arrest in Ohio on multiple Clark County Warrants from the day before the murder is believed to have been committed.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“We actually had an incident there on May the 9th, at his residence, where we located him and arrested him and he kicked the back window out of a cruiser and escaped on foot,” said Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue.

The Sheriff’s Department is not releasing the victim’s cause of death, or name until an autopsy is finished. However, family said they think victim is 34-year old Daryl Wiseman, who lives near the crime scene. They have set up this GoFundMe Page to help with funeral expenses, and help a relative travel to the funeral.

Kinney is being held in the Warren County Jail in Ohio. “Of course we are in the process of taking murder warrant as we speak. Those will be sent to Ohio, served on him, then we will start the extradition process to bring him back,” said Sheriff Perdue.

Missing Person Alejandro Arzola of Dallas, TX

A Dallas family is asking for the public’s help finding a 32-year-old man last seen more than a month ago.

Alejandro Arzola was last seen about 3:15 p.m. on June 20, his family said. Arzola was traveling north on Loop 12 in his blue 2009 Dodge Ram when he hit a guardrail near the Interstate 635 express ramp and flipped his truck, family said. The vehicle was abandoned when officers arrived.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Arzola’s family said he called his girlfriend after the accident and said he was OK. That was the last time anyone heard from him.

Arzola is described as 5-foot-10 and weighing about 180 pounds. He has a tattoo on his lower left arm of a woman with a Mexican sombrero and the words “Brown Pride” underneath.

Dallas police said the family filed a missing person’s report July 9 but did not provide any other information.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dallas police at 214-671-4268.

Missing Person International Parental Kidnapping Case

When 9-year-old Billy Hanson didn’t return to Pennsylvania after spending the summer with his father in Seattle, the boy’s mother called her local police department, setting in motion an international kidnapping investigation that led FBI agents halfway around the world to a tiny island in the South Pacific.

What would eventually bring the case to a successful conclusion was the extraordinary collaboration between local, federal, and international law enforcement and other agencies. But on that September day in 2014 when Billy was not on the flight he was supposed to be on, his mother “was obviously very concerned,” said Special Agent Carolyn Woodbury, who led the investigation from the FBI’s Seattle Division.

Johanna Hanson had agreed to let her son spend that July and August living with his father, Jeff Hanson, aboard a 30-foot sailboat named the Draco. But after Billy arrived in Washington, she began receiving text messages from her estranged husband suggesting that Billy would not be returning in the fall—a clear violation of their court-approved custody agreement.

Locator Map of Island of Niue

Johanna called the Hazelton Pennsylvania Police Department, who, in turn, contacted the Port of Seattle Police Department. In August, a welfare check was conducted, which showed that Billy and his father were on the boat in Seattle, and all seemed to be well. A week later, however, the airplane ticket Billy’s grandfather had purchased for his return to the East Coast was never used—and the Draco was nowhere to be found.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

The FBI-led Seattle Safe Streets Task Force, which includes the Seattle Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, was called for assistance. Task force members who went to the marina and elsewhere to conduct interviews learned that 46-year-old Jeff Hanson had given away some of his personal belongings, that he had previously sailed the Draco around the world, and—most significantly—that he had a six-day head start on investigators. In other words, he was likely on the open sea and could be headed anywhere. Investigators also learned another troubling fact, Woodbury said: “We were told that Billy didn’t know how to swim.”

On September 12, 2014, a federal warrant was issued for Jeff Hanson, and Woodbury and task force members worked quickly to “get the word out” about the kidnapping. FBI offices up and down the West Coast were alerted, along with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The Coast Guard and U.S. Navy were notified, and hourly announcements about the kidnapping were made on maritime radio channels. In addition, the FBI’s investigative publicity team distributed posters online and on social media networks showing pictures of Billy, his father, and the Draco.

“Our investigation suggested that Jeff Hanson would likely sail either to Mexico, South America, or the South Pacific,” Woodbury said. The FBI’s legal attaché offices—known as legats—were contacted, and in Australia, Legat Canberra disseminated fliers and other information to the Pacific Transnational Crime Coordination Centre, an organization of police, customs and immigrations, and other agencies whose goal is to gather and share intelligence to stop transnational crime in the South Pacific. Meanwhile, news reports about Billy’s kidnapping were being broadcast everywhere.

On October 29, 2014, Legat Canberra reported that Billy and his father had been seen on the remote island nation of Niue, located about 1,500 miles northeast of New Zealand. The island has fewer than 1,200 residents, but a woman recognized Billy and his father from news reports and contacted the local chief of police.

Jeff Hanson was detained on immigration charges, and FBI agents from Seattle began the long trip to Niue, which is said to be one of the least visited places on the planet. There are only two flights on and off the island per week.

“The irony for Jeff Hanson,” said Woodbury, “was that he was immediately recognized in one of the most remote places in the world. For law enforcement,” she added, “it illustrates that collaboration and asking for the public’s help were the absolute keys to solving this case.” Woodbury had particular praise for the international assistance provided by the Niue Police Department, the New Zealand Police, and New Zealand Customs Service.

After his harrowing odyssey, Billy was reunited with his mother. “This was no carefree adventure for him,” Woodbury explained. “It was a traumatic experience.” Investigators learned that shortly after the Draco left Seattle, the dinghy that carried most of the food and water for the trip was lost at sea. By the time Billy and his father reached Niue after 60 days aboard the Draco, the 9-year-old had lost 30 pounds.

On November 11, Jeff Hanson appeared in federal court in Seattle to face international kidnapping charges. He pled guilty in March 2015 and was sentenced last week to time served, which was about seven months in prison. As for the Draco, which was Hanson’s residence, it remains in Niue in dry dock—some 5,500 miles from Seattle—accumulating dock fees.

Wrongful Death Pastor Accused in Shooting Competent To Stand Trial

A Boyle Co. judge has ruled that pastor Kenneth Allen Keith is competent to stand trial in the shooting deaths of three people.

On September 20, 2013, Danville Police say Kenneth Allen Keith walked into ABC Gold, Games And More in Danville and shot the owners, Mike and Angela Hockensmith, as well as their client, Daniel Smith. The crime occurred while the Hockensmiths’ two children hid inside.

In an interview with LEX 18, Keith said that he is competent to stand trial and that he is innocent of the charges.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

In a Boyle County courtroom on July 27, a judge agreed with Keith.

According to an affidavit, Keith told an acquaintance he believed there was a hit on Smith and that the Hockensmiths happened to be there at the time. It  goes on to say that Keith told the acquaintance that the Hockensmiths weren’t innocent and had cost him a lot of money.

The families of the Hockensmiths and Smith did not make comment on the hearing which occurred behind closed doors. The trial date has not yet been set but another hearing will be held September 1.

The Commonwealth’s attorney states that this is still a death penalty case.

Pedophile Tracking 74 Year Old Iowa Man Sentenced to 50 Years

A 74-year-old Floyd man convicted earlier this year of child sexual abuse has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the crimes.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports that John Lusk was sentenced Friday to the maximum of 25 years on each count of second-degree sexual abuse. Judge DeDra Schroeder also denied Lusk’s motion for a new trial.

Prosecutors say Lusk must serve at least 35 years before he’s eligible for parole.

Lusk was convicted of sexually abusing two 8-year-old children at different times.

Lusk was a volunteer with the Charles City Foster Grandparent Program, working with children at local schools and day cares.

Lusk also faces trial in Woodbury County on three more charges of second-degree sexual abuse.

Private Detective: Air Conditioning Units Stolen From Church

Leaders at Crosspointe Church in Versailles say they were surprised to find out their air conditioning units were stolen Saturday night.

“Well, my thought would be that we’re disappointed number one that anyone would do that,” said Pastor Bryan Roberts.

As members of the Church started to arrive for services Sunday morning, they realized one of their buildings had a higher than usual temperature.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

“Downstairs it had already warmed up to about 74 degrees, and we usually keep it at about 71, so it wasn’t too bad. But the upstairs was already at 80 degrees,” said Pastor Roberts.

A maintenance worker found two air conditioning units, with an estimated value of about $5,000, had been stolen. The building is used as a fellowship hall and educational annex, with houses classrooms for activities like Sunday School.

Church leaders believe the thieves may have been watching the property. If you have any information, you’re asked to call Versailles Police.

Missing Person Toddler in Jacksonville, FL

Nearing 48 hours after toddler Lonzie Barton’s disappearance, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office believes the man who initially reported the boy missing is a liar and that he falsified the original abduction story.

While police have not located Lonzie or learned what has happened to the boy, Chief Tom Hackney said the man who reported the boy missing, William Ruben Ebron Jr., 32, is where attention is being focused.

“If there is something to be a suspect of, he’s going to be it,” Hackney said.

Ebron is being held in the Duval County jail on two counts of felony child neglect. He had his first court appearance on Saturday just after 2 p.m. with Judge Ron Higbee.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

After nearly half-an-hour, Ebron and his attorney returned. Prosecutor Richard Mantei requested $50,000 bond for each charge, as well as a number of accompanying conditions. Mantei said Ebron was playing “footsie with the facts” and had repeatedly lied to police, hindering the search for Lonzie.

Ebron’s attorney requested $10,000 bond per charge, noting that even if he bonded out, Baker County had revoked his bond on a previous, unrelated drug case and Ebron would remain in custody. One of the conditions of Ebron’s bond in Baker County was that he not contact his girlfriend, Lonzie’s mother Lonna Lauramore, 25, but the two were living together in Jacksonville.

Higbee called the state’s request for bond “more than reasonable” — and even less than he originally intended to grant — when approving the bond. In addition to the $100,000 total bond and no contact with Lonzie’s mother, another woman with a domestic violence injunction against him, the families of the two alleged victims or any children under age 18, Ebron must also wear a GPS device, cannot use drugs or possess guns.

Ebron did not appear to bond out by Saturday evening.

His tentative arraignment is set for Aug. 17.

Police are continuing their search in the Baymeadows area where Lonzie was reported missing early Friday morning. About 40 to 50 detectives are knocking on doors, the dive team is searching nearby bodies of water, the K-9 and cadaver dogs are being used and the air team will assist as necessary, Hackney said.

Hackney told reporters Saturday evening that “a potential piece of evidence” was recovered at Baker Skinner Park at 7641 Powers Ave., about a mile from the apartment complex where Lonzie lived. They also had a tip that led them to the Philips Highway and Interstate 295 area, south of The Avenues.

“We began to search some wooded areas and some bodies of water. There is a mobile home park in that area where we began to search inside the mobile home park and around,” Hackney said. “Our efforts [Sunday] will continue in the south Philips Highway and I-295 area.”

Hackney admitted that he is frustrated.

“I have somebody who knows what happened to Lonzie and the cooperation level hasn’t been enough to have us either recover that child alive or recover that child’s body,” he said outside Wolfson High School, the police search’s command center.

“The victim’s family in this case deserves answers; the community deserves answers,” Hackney said. “One person who has that key to us hasn’t provided that to us and that is very frustrating.”

Ebron first told police he left 21-month-old Lonzie in his car parked at the Ravenwood Apartments in the 8000 block of South Old Kings Road in the Baymeadows area about 2:20 a.m. Friday. Ebron told police he was preparing to pick up the mother from her job at Wacko’s Gentleman’s Club, located near the corner of Emerson St. and Spring Park Road, and had the boy and his 5-year-old sister in the car when he went back into the apartment.

The boy’s 5-year-old sister then left the car to tell Ebron that she was scared, and he went outside to find the car and toddler gone, police said Ebron told them. Police arrived on scene in two minutes, and located the 1995 orange Honda Civic in about 15 to 20 minutes, abandoned and with the keys still inside, just a short distance away in the 8100 block of Cesperdes Avenue.

Lonzie was nowhere to be found.

Police have since interviewed Lonzie’s 5-year-old sister at least twice, but they still don’t know what she’s seen. None of her answers have been anything concrete enough to lead to Lonzie, though.

“She’s cooperative, but she’s 5 years old,” Hackney said. He later added: “Her story kind of went back and forth about whether they were or were not in the car.”

Hackney could not say if anyone had tried to coach the girl on her answers.

Hackney said police later learned through Ebron’s own admission that he went inside the apartment to use cocaine. But police do not believe anyone stole the vehicle while Ebron was inside doing drugs, Hackney said.

Police on Friday initially said Ebron was cooperative and was at police headquarters of his own free will. But that has since changed and Ebron was charged with two counts of felony child neglect on Friday.

“I am not able to disclose to you child victims of child neglect, so I can’t tell you what two children he was charged with neglect over,” Hackney said. “People aren’t stupid.”

It has become clear was that Ebron’s car was never stolen, Hackney said.

“We’re still going to work this as an abduction, because honestly, I don’t know what happened to Lonzie,” Hackney said. “I can’t say at this point in time whether Lonzie is alive or dead. We’re going to work this case with that information, and work it as many different ways as we need to recover Lonzie.

“My hopes, prayers and thoughts are that we are able to find Lonzie alive, that somewhere along this chain of events that caused Ebron to do whatever he did, whether he intentionally or unintentionally harmed the child, or something happened to the child, or if the child is alive and fine.

“We don’t know.”

Police still believe the mother and biological father have nothing to do with Lonzie’s disappearance, so, Hackney said, the focus comes back to Ebron.

“Without a doubt, the report he gave that his car was taken by some unknown suspect is a lie and not true,” Hackney said. “I’m going to allow the Amber Alert to stay — because if this is an abduction, and I feel like by definition it is — then Ebron is the suspect of that abduction and [the Amber Alert] continues to allow focus to remain on that until I recover Lonzie.”

The last confirmed sighting of Lonzie was around 8 p.m. on Thursday by the boy’s mother, Hackney said. Because police believe Ebron to be lying about the car theft, it also means the boy could have gone missing earlier, sometime between 8 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. Friday. Anyone who saw Ebron’s distinctive orange car during that time frame is asked to call police at (904) 630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 845-TIPS.

Additionally, anyone who may have talked to Ebron recently is being urged to call police, Hackney said. Their conversations and interactions may allow police to know where to go with future interviews and searches, he said.

Wrongful Death Woman Found Decapitated in Phoenix

Phoenix police officers found a woman’s decapitated body and two mutilated dogs inside an apartment where officials believe the man responsible also cut his left arm off and removed one of his own eyeballs.

The gruesome scene was discovered just after 9:45 a.m. in the area of 13th Place and Colter Street, police said.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

A male neighbor knocked on the door of the apartment to check on the 43-year-old suspect, whom he hadn’t seen since the day before. When the man, whose name was not immediately released, answered the door, his left arm was severed at the elbow and his left eyeball was missing.

The neighbor could see that the apartment’s floors and walls were covered in blood and immediately contacted authorities. Officers saw several knives in the residence, and it remains unknown which were used during the slaying and self-mutilation.

When officers arrived, they detained the suspect and entered the apartment. There, they found the woman’s decapitated body inside a walk-in closet. Two dead dogs were also discovered inside the residence.

“It was an absolutely horrific scene,” Crump said.

The suspect spoke with police officers outside the apartment and indicated that he “killed three family members,” Crump said. It was unknown if the suspect was referring to the woman and the dogs or other relatives, but police are checking on other family members.

The woman’s name was not immediately released.

Crump said the suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was undergoing surgery.

Crump wouldn’t specify the relationship between the suspect and the woman, but said that the man has a “known mental illness” and that police have received calls to the apartment regarding the female victim and suspect.

“These two have a history of a domestic-violence relationship,” he said.
