Wrongful Death Remains Found Confirmed to Be Missing UVa. Student

Remains found last weekend are those of Hannah Graham, the University of Virginia student who vanished more than a month ago.

The remains were discovered Oct. 18 in a heavily wooded area in rural Virginia where Hannah Graham, the 18-year-old University of Virginia student, disappeared more than a month ago.

A pair of dark, tight pants–like those Graham was wearing the night she disappeared–were found near the body.

http://liarcatchers.com/wrongful_death.html

“I don’t know how else to explain it. Something inside me just told me continue to look. I do believe God wanted us to find what we found,” said Dale Terry, Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Department.

Graham was last seen in the early morning hours of Sept. 13. Surveillance video captured her with 32-year-old Jesse Matthew Jr.

Police tracked him down in Texas and charged him with Graham’s abduction.

Police say forensic evidence also connects Matthew to the death of Morgan Harrington, who vanished from Blacksburg, Virginia in October 2009. Her body was found three months later.

Hannah Graham’s parents, John and Sue Graham, released the following statement:

When we first met Chief Longo he promised to find our precious daughter, Hannah, and during five long weeks his resolve to fulfill that promise never wavered. When we started this journey together we all hoped for a happier ending. Sadly that was not to be, but due to the tenacity and determination of Chief Longo, Hannah is coming home to us and we will be eternally grateful to him for this.

The search for Hannah would not have been successful were it not for the many, many people who helped, including Mark Eggeman and VDEM, local, state and federal law enforcement officers, the staff of the City of Charlottesville, and the dedicated members of numerous volunteer search and rescue groups. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We also give our heartfelt thanks to all those who took part in the community search, to the citizens of Charlottesville, and to the individuals, businesses and organizations, both local and national, who provided untold resources to help support the search for Hannah. We would also like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to those who provided support to us and to our family throughout this ordeal, including the staff and students of the University of Virginia, our friends, neighbors and work colleagues, the staff and students of West Potomac High School, Hannah’s friends, and the countless kind people who have sent us messages of support. We thank you all.

We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter, Hannah. Over recent weeks Hannah has been described by those who know her as bright, witty, thoughtful, loyal and fun to be around. She was all those things and more. Put simply, Hannah lit up our lives, the lives of our family and the lives of her friends and others who knew her. Although we have lost our precious Hannah, the light she radiated can never be extinguished. We will hold it in our hearts forever and it will help sustain us as we face a painful future without her. We are so very proud of Hannah and all that she achieved. Although only 18 years old, Hannah had just started her second year at the University of Virginia when she disappeared and was excelling academically. She loved U.Va. and the City of Charlottesville, and was very happy to return there after the summer break. Hannah had intended to pursue a career in global public health, she wanted to help others, and it is heart-breaking for us that she was robbed so tragically of the opportunity to fulfill her dream.

In closing we would like to draw attention to the fact that, although the waiting has ended for us, there are other families both in Virginia and beyond who have not been as fortunate in that their loved ones are still missing. Please continue to hold these families in your thoughts and prayers.

We do not intend to make any further statements at this time, nor to comment on the ongoing criminal investigation. We ask the media to respect our privacy and that of our family as we continue to griev

Identity Theft 18 Arrested in Ohio For A Series of Criminal Schemes

Eighteen Ohio people were indicted for their roles in a series of criminal schemes, including money laundering, identity theft, alien harboring, and arson, centered around seven IHOP restaurants in northwest Ohio and Indiana that resulted in losses of more than $3 million, law enforcement officials announced today.

“These defendants turned pancakes houses into crime dens,” said Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. “This indictment lays out a menu of crimes ranging from harboring undocumented workers to identity theft to money laundering to insurance fraud.”

http://liarcatchers.com/identity_theft_investigation.html

Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Cleveland office, said, “Today’s arrests are the culmination of years of joint investigative work by the FBI and its partners to root out the corporate fraud outlined in the indictment.

The investigation of fraudsters who chose to operate their businesses through the manipulation of financial reporting, money laundering, and other illegal methods will continue to be a top FBI priority.”

“Collaboration with law enforcement at all levels is a powerful tool in the fight against organized criminal groups,” said Brian M. Moskowitz, Special Agent in Charge for ICE-HSI in Ohio and Michigan. “HSI is committed to leveraging its unique statutory authorities and investigative expertise to bring down groups involved a myriad of criminal activities as have been alleged in this case.”

Among those indicted are Tarek “Terry” Elkafrawi, who, from December 2003 through the present, owned seven IHOP restaurants in Evansville, Indiana; and Holland, Toledo (two locations), Findlay, Perrysburg, and Lima, Ohio.

Elkafrawi, along with Autumn Lee Tangas and others, used their control of the restaurants to execute various criminal activities to fraudulently manipulate sales figures, salaries, and payrolls to evade taxes, avoid paying royalties, and illegally divert money from the IHOP franchises to themselves, according to the 64-count indictment.

Elkafrawi employed about 200 illegal immigrants to work at his restaurants, most of whom used fraudulent or stolen identities while working. He and others employed several people to arrange for the arrival of the workers. If the worker had false paperwork or documentation, the manager would accept it without verification; if they did not have documentation, Elkafrawi and others would arrange for Carlos Gamboa, Jose Leon-Gonzales, and others to obtain fraudulent documentation for the workers, according to the indictment.

Elkafrawi also arranged for managers to cash payroll checks for the illegal workers. Elkafrawi and others assigned second identities to workers to avoid paying overtime wages and reduce the restaurants’ payments to the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation.

They were also able to underpay the undocumented workers because they knew the workers would not complain or report them to law enforcement, according to the indictment.

Overall, Elkafrawi and others were able to generate $1.2 million in unreported income by manipulating wages and underreporting income of undocumented workers, according to the indictment.

In 2008, the Findlay IHOP burned as the result of arson. The fire was started by Jose Leon-Gonzales at the direction of Elkafrawi and a person identified as M.K. to facilitate an insurance fraud scheme. Elkafrawi claimed approximately $1.3 million in fraudulent insurance claims, based in part on inflated payroll claims, lost income, and invoices, according to the indictment.

M.K., not charged herein, used two identities to split his salary from the restaurants between two paychecks, creating lower reportable income for both. Using those identities, he claimed approximately $140,000 in Medicaid payments and $35,000 in food stamps and welfare benefits from the state of Ohio. M.K. and Elkafrawi created a false property company to which M.K. paid “rent” to Elkafrawi to show a lower income. Elkafrawi and M.K. sanctioned and encouraged employees to file fraudulent claims, according to the indictment.

Elkafrawi, Kelly Elkafrawi, M.K., and Tarek Eid Omar also engaged in a series of real estate transactions to hide and conceal the source of the funds derived from their schemes. Elkafrawi purchased homes at 10400 Tecumseh Drive, Newburgh, Indiana; and 14745 Prairie Lake Drive, Toledo, using laundered assets, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors are seeking to seize the Indiana home as well as more than $37,000 in currency, the seven IHOP franchises, a dozen bank accounts, and several vehicles, according to the indictment.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Duncan T. Brown and Gary D. Arbeznik following an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations, Internal Revenue Service, the Ohio Bureau of Worker’s Compensation, and Toledo Police.

An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Private Detective: 3 Cynthiana Gas Stations Robbed in One Month

Police in Cynthiana are working three gas station robberies in less than a month. Even more alarming is that the surveillance pictures have folks in town wondering is the cases could be connected.

One of the surveillance videos shows that around 7 p.m. Sunday, a white man in a dark, blue hoodie walks into Ken’s at Church and Bridge. The man, knife in hand, finds the clerk, who opens the register. The robber then grabs some cash and, in a matter of seconds, takes off.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

That man is described as somewhere between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-8.

A man in a dark-blue hoodie was also captured in surveillance robbing the Fast Max on US 27 the night of Sept. 30. That man is also wearing a mask, a glove, and gray sweat pants. The man, described as about 6-feet-tall, points a gun at the clerk, gets the money and runs.

“People are needing money and they’re desperate, and they’ll do whatever they have to do,” said Tim Burke.

Burke, the manager of First Stop on West Pleasant says his place was hit the night of Oct. 4. Around 11:30 p.m., Burke says a white man wearing – you guessed it – a dark-colored hoodie and mask, walked in pretending to have a gun. This time, though, no money was taken. The clerk called the man’s bluff and the would-be robber ran.

While the suspect descriptions are not exactly the same, Burke and several others say it’s possible the same guy is behind all three.

“It’s all between 5’8″ and 6′. You know when you’re nervous you’re gonna miss two or three inches, so it’s obvious it could be,” Burke said.

While Cynthiana police are not saying the three are connected, investigators do say they will look into that possibility.

Private Detective: Madison County Family Seek’s Public’s Help in Search for Wheelchair

A Madison County family wants to know what happened to their custom-made motorized wheelchair after it turned up missing this morning before a doctor’s appointment.

Leslie Burns was loading her husband into the car when she noticed the wheelchair wasn’t there. The chair had been specifically designed for her husband after a work injury left him with a rare pain disease in one of his legs.

“It’s very crucial. We waited a long time for it. It helps give him his independence,” says Burns.

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

The last time Leslie saw the chair was Wednesday night when they were in Irvine for a ball game. She’s speaking with the press in hope that anyone who lives off of Red Lick Road, between Berea and Irvine, to keep an eye out for the missing chair in case it fell off her SUV on the side of the road as she travelled back from the game.

The couple had planned a date night this weekend for the first time in years, something that is now impossible for the couple to do, if the chair is not returned.

“I hope someone didn’t steal it, but if they did steal it, you know, please return it no questions asked,” says Burns.

If you have seen the wheelchair, you are asked to contact the Madison County Sheriff or the Irvine police.
