Fraud Investigation Warnings Against Security Scams

A word of warning tonight to those who have home security systems. Bates Security says they believe some people are out to scam their customers, falsely claiming to be from Bates Security, then trying to sell them another service.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

Jeremy Bates says it happens every summer, but in the past week he’s had customers calling about someone knocking at their door claiming to be with Bates Security. But he says his company isn’t the only one that these scammers claim to be with.

“Whatever sign they have in the front yard, that’s amazingly who they’re with,” Bates says.

That’s how they gain your trust,” Bates says. Would-be customers don’t realize the person is actually with another company until the paperwork is signed and they’re long gone.

Bates says to make sure you actually have a scheduled appointment, and ask to see a company ID while also checking to see if they’re in a company vehicle.

If you find yourself the target of such a scam, report it to the Attorney General.

Private Detective: Manhunt Launched After Suspect Assaults Officer

Lexington police launched a massive manhunt along I-64 in eastern Fayette County after a man assaulted an officer and ran after a traffic stop Friday morning.

Police say the officer pulled over a car near the 83 mile marker around 7 a.m. Officials say when the officer discovered the suspect had outstanding warrants and tried to make an arrest, the man resisted and tired to take the officer’s weapon. Police say the suspect ran through a tree line and into a field.

Multiple units rushed to the scene. Police brought in a K9 unit and deployed a helicopter to search for the suspect, but they didn’t have any success. Officers gave up the search around 10 a.m.

Police say they found information in the car that they hope will lead them to the suspect.

Wrongful Death Man Charged in Girlfriend’s Death

Nearly a month after a woman died in a northern Kentucky home, deputies have charged her boyfriend with murder.

On June 4, Daniel Vetter, 33, called 911 and reported that his girlfriend had hit her head and wouldn’t wake up. Deputies say Vetter told the 911 operator that he was outside talking with his mother on the phone when Meranda Hobbs, 27, started banging her head on the window and was now unresponsive.

Deputies say they were skeptical of Vetter’s story from the beginning. On Wednesday, deputies served a warrant on Vetter, who was already in jail on a DUI charge. Officials say authorities had been at the home several times before to investigate domestic violence calls.

“We have every reason in the world to believe he allowed her to lay there and her condition to deteriorate to the point of her death for an hour before calling us,” Boone County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Major Tom Scheben said.

Deputies charged Vetter with murder, tampering with physical evidence and making a false report.

Drug Dog Sweep Brooklyn, Conn. Man Arrested After Crack Found

A Brooklyn man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after police found drugs in his car during a traffic stop.

Police say troopers saw a car driving on South Main Street being operated by 33 year old Henry “Hank” Tyus shortly before 4:30. Tyus was known to have a suspended license, and was pulled over by police.

Troopers then used a drug detecting dog to help search Tyus’ vehicle. The dog alerted officers to the odor of narcotics along the driver’s side door seam, according to police.

Troopers searched the vehicle and found pre-packaged crack cocaine and a large amount of money.

Tyus was arrested without incident and was charged with operating under suspension, possession of narcotics and possession of narcotics with intent to sell. He is due in court July 21.

Missing Person Search Continues for Colorado Springs Mom Missing Four Years

For the last four years Sarah Heriford and her siblings kept renting the house where her mother, Debbie Heriford, last lived.

“Just on the off chance that this would be where mom would come back,” Sarah Heriford said.

The last place Debbie was seen was in her neighborhood walking her dog near Maroon Bells Avenue in north Colorado Springs. She had just arrived home from work as a crossing guard for Discovery Canyon Elementary.

“There was a neighbor who had seen her walking and that was the last person to see her,” Sarah Heriford said.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

Four days later when she wouldn’t answer their calls, her children showed up searching for her.

“One thing that was strange about the car is she always parked the car in the garage,” Sarah Heriford said. “She was very, very careful about that and Sunday morning when we came over here the car was parked on the street, and she never parks her car on the street.”

Sarah says her family searched, even posted tens of thousands of flyers with her picture but nothing turned up except the dog. She said the dog was found a day after her mother reportedly disappeared. She said it was tied to a post behind a business about a quarter mile from her mother’s house.

When we asked Sarah what she thinks happened to her mother she replied, “I don’t want to speculate. I think she was out walking her dog and then something happened at that point.”

“Everyone I had contact with over the years describes her as nothing but an outstanding lady and somebody you would want to have as a friend,” said Detective Derek Graham with the Colorado Springs Police Department. Graham is the lead detective on the Heriford case.

Graham said he knows Debbie didn’t just walk away and said it was totally out of character for her to not contact her children.

When we asked Graham how he deals not being able to find Heriford he replied, “It is frustrating. Just like all of our investigations we’d like to solve 100 percent of all of our cases to include missing persons. It’s frustrating to us but all we can do is our best.”

When asked if he thinks Heriford is alive Graham said, “No. I can’t really comment on it but we believe foul play is involved.”

In the meantime, as Sarah prays for an answer in her mom’s disappearance, she has a message for her mother and the community.

“I just want everyone including her, if she is watching this, to know we haven’t forgotten about this,” Heriford said. “This is something her four children think about every single day.”

Heriford was in the middle of a divorce and was estranged from her husband when she disappeared. We reached out to her husband but he told us he was legally bound and can’t say anything.

If you or someone you know has any information about Debbie Heriford’s disappearance please call CrimeStoppers at 634-STOP. You don’t have to give your name and you could earn a cash reward.

It has been four years since a Colorado Springs resident Debbie Heriford disappeared from her neighborhood. We talk to the lead investigator on her case. We also met with one of Heriford

Wrongful Death Investigators Have Person of Interest in Dylan Redwine Case

Investigators have identified a person of interest in the case of a 13-year-old boy who went missing in 2012 and whose remains were found seven months later in southwestern Colorado.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office announced the development in Dylan Redwine’s case Wednesday but declined to publicly identify the person. Investigators also stressed they do not yet have a suspect, according to The Durango Herald ( http://goo.gl/DOkK90 ).

“It’s a fair statement that we are very encouraged that we have crossed the bridge from the unknown to the known,” said Pete Klismet, a former FBI criminal profiler hired by the sheriff’s office and the district attorney’s office to help investigate.

Dylan lived north of Colorado Springs with his mother but went to his father’s home near Vallecito Reservoir northeast of Durango for a court-ordered visit in November 2012. Mark Redwine has said he returned home from doing errands to find his son gone.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Dan Bender told The Denver Post that two searches in June near where the remains were found also turned up items of interest, and more searches are planned.

Wednesday’s announcement has given the case momentum it has not had since the teenager’s remains were found.

“There is a level of excitement right now that has not been previously felt before,” said Klismet, who was hired about six months ago.
