Fraud Investigation Scam Alert Man Says Mom Died and Asking For Money

People across Central Kentucky said they’re outraged after they said a scammer is making his way through local hospitals and businesses targeting some of the most vulnerable people for money.

The man in the photo has been showing up at hospitals and preying on grieving families asking them for cash.

The photo showing the man was taken at Mount Sterling’s Hospital last week.

The man allegedly walked into the waiting room, tears down his face, saying his mother just died and he didn’t have any money.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

But how did the woman who took the picture know it wasn’t true?

According to her husband, he said it’s because they saw the same man with the same story at St. Joseph’s East in Lexington two weeks earlier and gave him money.

Jay Garrett gave him money at St. Joseph’s but then he saw the man again a week later and then a third time at a different hospital.

“This past Monday, my wife went to the hospital in Mt. Sterling to have blood work done and when she was sitting there, guy walks in and starts telling the same story.”

The couple asked the hospital about it.

“They said we can tell you that no one h as died on his floor and no one has died of a heart attack,” Garrett said. “This is the second time that guy’s been here, if he comes back, please let us know so we can call security.”

Angela Abshear was at Good Samaritan Hospital when she ran into the man, apparently going through a tough time.

“He seemed like he was in real distress. He told us that he was talking on his cell phone and said that his mother had passed away,” Angela Abshear said. “We gave him money because he was saying he didn’t have any money to go home on or anything. We did feel sorry for him because it did seem like he was genuine.”

But some at the hospital visitors said he’s not. A few days later, he was back.

No one knows his name or where he is from but UK Police said he’s also been spotted UK Hospital and they are investigating.

“That’s horrible that someone would do that because I really thought the man needed help,” Abshear said.

Many others have called our newsroom or posted online that they have had run-ins with this man at other places.

The list includes Berea’s hospital, Clark County’s hospital and Walmarts in Nicholasville and Winchester.

We also heard from someone at Rockcastle Regional Hospital who said they’re familiar with him and they are working with other hospitals to keep him away from visitors.

Fraud Investigation NY Man Sentenced to 120 Months for Wire Fraud

A Scarsdale, New York man, who was convicted of wire fraud relating to a Ponzi scheme, was sentenced to 120 months in prison yesterday. U.S. District Court Judge Gregory F. VanTatenhove sentenced Eilat Lev, 65, on his conviction.

Lev previously admitted that he defrauded investors, of approximately $33,000,000, during a scheme he executed from 2005 through 2008. According to the plea agreement, Lev admitted that he owned a business called International Tractor Company, Inc. (ITC), located in Ardsley, New York. He was in the business of buying and selling heavy construction equipment, domestically and internationally. Lev relied, in part, on other individuals to finance the purchase of the equipment, with the agreement that he would arrange for the sale of the equipment and would return the amount invested, pay interest on the amount invested, and share the profit made on any sale with the individuals who provided the financing.

http://liarcatchers.com/fraud_investigation.html

In 2002, an investor accepted an ongoing business proposition from Lev, where the investor would finance the purchase of specific items of equipment on the global market. Lev had identified the equipment for sale and had typically secured a willing buyer. For each transaction, the investor would receive paper work from Lev identifying the equipment, the amount required to purchase it, and confirmation of the sale price, which had been negotiated and agreed upon by the ultimate purchaser. Upon receiving this documentation, the investor would arrange for the transfer of money from his bank account to an account utilized by ITC, in New York. Under the terms of the agreement, Lev would complete the transaction and would return the investment, the agreed interest and, the share of the profit to the investor, within an agreed upon time frame.

In 2005, the investor opened a line of credit with First Southern National Bank located in Pulaski County, Kentucky. He used this line of credit to continue to finance transactions with Lev and his company. In order to draw from the line of credit, Lev was required to submit the same itemized documentation to the bank, which would then transfer funds, by wire, from the investor’s line of credit to Lev’s account at Gotham Bank of New York.

Lev admitted that he perpetrated a scheme to defraud this investor, and others, by soliciting millions of dollars under false pretenses, failing to invest the investors’ funds as promised, and misappropriating investors’ funds without the knowledge or authorization of the investors. In furtherance of the scheme, rather than purchasing and selling specific items of equipment and returning the investment, interest, and profit to them, Lev ran a scheme by which he falsified purchase and sales documents and diverted new investor funds to pay prior investors their principal, interest and/or profits on prior transactions, thereby creating the impression among investors that the business was successful, which enticed them to invest more money. By the end of 2008, Lev was without funds to pay his investors their principal, interest, and/or profit, causing these individuals to lose approximately $33,700,000.

Lev plead guilty in October of 2013.

Under federal law, Eilat Lev must serve 85 percent of his prison sentence and will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for five years.

Kerry B. Harvey, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and Howard S. Marshall, Special Agent in Charge, Louisville Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation jointly announced the sentence.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura K. Voorhees.

Wrongful Death Hawaiian Man Indicted in Death of Pregnant Ex-girlfriend

A Hawaiian man accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend who vanished in February has been indicted for her murder, the Associated Press reported.

Steven Capobianco was indicted on charges of second-degree murder and arson by a Maui grand jury on Friday. A person close to the investigation told the AP that Capobianco, who is currently being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center on an unrelated charge, is expected to be re-arrested for the latest charge on Monday.

The victim, 27-year-old Carly Scott, was five months pregnant when she was last seen by her family at her sister’s house in Haiku. The woman’s dog was later found in the nearby community of Nahiku. Afterwards police began treating the missing person case as a homicide.

The torched remains of Scott’s Toyota 4Runner was eventually found in a location north of Maui Island, but Scott’s body was never found. Capobianco allegedly burned his ex-girlfriend’s SUV in an attempt to cover up the murder.

Capobianco, who was the father of Scott’s unborn baby, said he did see her the same night her family reported her missing, but that he did not kill her, according to Hawaii News Now.

The last time he saw Scott was when she gave him a ride to his pickup truck because the vehicle had broken down. Capobianco fixed the truck and then drove off with Scott following behind him, but somewhere along the way he could not see her anymore.

Capobianco said he assumed Scott arrived at her destination, according to the AP.

He was previously arrested on charges of terroristic threatening and prohibited deadly weapons. Bail for those charges was set at $500,000, but prosecutors are expected to ask for $2 million for the murder and arson charges.

The AP could not immediately reach the suspect or his lawyer for comment.

Missing Person Update on Missing Boy, Father Arrested and Says Ex-Wife Lied

The search is over for a missing six-year-old boy and his father. Stevie Saylor Jr, 29, was arrested Tuesday in Rockcastle County. He went to jail for a laundry list of charges after safely returning his son in Madison County.

Among other charges, Stevie Saylor Jr. was arrested for unlawful imprisonment, wanton endangerment and assault. He is accused of holding his ex-wife captive at gunpoint, then running off with their son. However, he said none of that is true.

The emotions were overwhelming as the little boy returned to his mother’s loving arms. “I am so happy right now, I can’t even cry anymore. At first it was just tears, I couldn’t get to him fast enough,” said the child’s Mother, Kristen Saylor.

http://liarcatchers.com/missing_persons_investigations.html

There were tears of joy after a confusing few days. Kristen said it all started in Rockcastle County when her ex-husband, Stevie Saylor Jr, pistol whipped her and held her at gunpoint against her will. She said she escaped on Monday, however her ex-husband allegedly followed her to a home in Berea, slammed into her car and took off with their son and his daughter.

“I would never put my kids in harm or danger. I love my children,” said Stevie. From behind bars Stevie told LEX18 News his ex-wife was lying.

“We left out of fear, you know what I am saying,” said Stevie. Instead, he said he is afraid of his ex-wife because she is on drugs and unstable.

Still, Berea Police and Kentucky State Troopers spent around 24 hours searching for Stevie until he finally turned the little boy over to his grandmother Tuesday afternoon. Then, as Stevie said he was on his way to turn himself in, he was arrested in Rockcastle County and charged with a half dozen crimes.

“I have not been hiding anywhere. I have been all over town, I have been on facebook. I drove straight to my moms and dropped my son off,” said Stevie.

“My son getting railroaded, like I said she is not telling the whole truth,” added Stevie’s Mother and the child’s Grandmother, Ruth Ann Harold.

Harold said she saw first hand that Stevie’s ex-wife was never being held captive. Whatever the truth is, this family agrees on one thing.

“The kids are fine, that’s most important,” said Harold.

Stevie is being held in the Rockcastle County Detention Center and his children are with family.

Private Detective, Lexington Police Looking for Krispy Kreme Robber

Lexington Police are asking for your help in finding a man they say held up a Krispy Kreme on July 6th. Just hours after the incident, a nearby hotel released surveillance video of the man police believe did it.

Unfortunately, he was masked, covered with a hoodie and the video did very little to help identify the man police want caught soon.

“If someone is willing to do that, walk through public carrying a rifle for a robbery on busy Richmond Road, what is this individual willing to do if they’re not caught? What’s the next step? Who’s gonna be robbed next?” says Detective Jason Rothermund

http://liarcatchers.com/contact.php

Police have been working each day since to try and get a better idea of who he is. They were able to retrieve the above photos from the Clean Sweep Car Wash and in these stills, the suspect is not yet covered and he is carrying the rifle he used to threaten the Krispy Kreme employees who were standing outside the business that night.

“It’s not everday you see someone use a rifle. It’s not easily concealed. It’s not something you can sneak up on people with. According to them, he walked up and showed them the rifle. Their immediate reaction was to throw their wallets on the ground,” says Det. Rothermund
